This is not about saving money.

That's been my understanding of it and why there is so much opposition to it.

I will throw my 2 cents in this. A few years ago I was opposed to not having my opportunity to elect those who are elected in my county. I have since changed my mind and although I respect those who see it differently I believe having an appointed Superintendent will provide accountability that I don't think is happening now.

In the usual Sowal style, this thread about the school board meetings rotating meeting locations has morphed into the discussion of changing to an appointed superintendent. It's all good. ;)

This movement has nothing to do with saving money. But maybe, just maybe, a happy side effect will be more bang for the buck we are spending. I have no idea why churches are involved in this issue- that is really weird, but I have found that some churches are very political here, so maybe that is it. Maybe the churches who feel we should continue to put politics before kids should "elect" their leadership as well and see how that works. ;) I know many teachers, and am in constant contact with many more, and have yet to here from one who dislikes the idea of an appointed superintendent.

I think those with a true desire to help the students, teachers, and schools, and who understand that strong schools make strong communities, also understand that there is no "right" being taken away in this situation. The numbers nationally speak volumes, and we are in the 1% that puts politics before kids. You can find all sorts of information at www.kidsbeforepolitics.com.

Public meetings to share information will be held starting soon, but you can get involved now in the volunteer section of the website above.

Of all the things we throw money at, schools are the most worthwhile. Anyone who sees money spent on schools as wasted is a moron. I don't know that having a superintendent appointed by the same corrupt people who rig the elections is progress, but I do know that education is the only thing that will help our community and country in the long run.

No one said the money was being wasted either. But....you have teachers fighting tooth and nail for money the Gov. set aside for them, that they can't get because of politics and a moronic Super and you compound the problem by throwing more money at a potential appointed Super who will do the elected boards bidding?

Do any of you think for a minute the current board doesn't have something to do with the teachers not getting the money the Gov. set aside for them?

Gimme a break!

I Missed some great posts over the Easter weekend!!! Thanks Lazin&drinkin. Thanks also Misty. Thank you for "not opposing" the hiring process. It seems as though you might be playing devil's advocate so that there is a clear understanding of the other side's point of view. I applaud you for doing so. You are doing a heckofa job. It helps proponents develop their counter arguments and prepares us better.

I'm not really trying to play the devils advocate...I have had this conversation with more than a few people including members of the media, teachers I know personally (I know several because my child did attend Walton Schools) and this is what I'm actually hearing from them.

It will cost more money (again, I'm not opposed to that per say) or the act of hiring a Super albeit I do think that having a Super who answers to an elected board isn't much different than what we have now. I think Ms. Anderson's big mistake was not listening to the the board or the people who elected her (excluding special interest groups of course) and playing to her political allies versus the people who re-elected her.

I also think if this passes there needs to be a new broom...for the current board with the exception of Mark Davis and we need to stop re-electing has-beens. If you have been on the school board before and weren't re-elected, chances are you shouldn't run again...in my opinion. Stop wasting your time and money...there is a reason you were not re-elected.
