My son and I were walking our dog (on a leash) on the beach in Grayton yesterday
around 3:45 PM. We were the only people out there, except for a deputy. He drove
up and called us over. He saw that we had a permit when we got closer and said:
"You've got a permit. I was going to give you a warning. This is Grayton and you
know somebody would have called."

I live in Grayton and was tempted to tell him that and ask him what he meant by
his comment, but I didn't. Instead, I just talked to him nicely for a minute, then
said goodbye. As I was leaving, he said: "Thanks for getting a permit."

Because Grayton Beach is known to have a few busybodies people who keep a very close eye on things.

First, NO more signs. They are everywhere, even on the boardwalks.

There's that pesky word again...Enforcement.

We have signs, we have rules, we have ordinances, yet No One with the leadership to Enforce any of it. You have to force officials to do there jobs through public shaming (spring break and WCSO at the Seascape meeting a few years ago), or you have to sue (wedding house case).

What are these people being paid to do? They are all paid to babysit.

Just like a sitter that waits for discipline (spank) given unruly child, until mommy gets home.

Problem is, there is no "mommy" in Walton.
The tourist rules the roost and can never be wrong.

Sad but true.
The TDC is the closet thing we have to a mommy in South Walton FL. And I'm grateful for their professionalism and excellence. But we are so much more than tourism. Unfortunately, many actually like the no govt leadership model where they can remain apathetic and do what they want. I'm used to it after 20 years to good old boy, do little, keep everything as it is. I don't think it's the best way for our community but it the way of our community. At least for now. At least we can get a traffic light now and then after the public screams bloody murder, and after much bloodshed on our roads.

Looks like Jim Bagby was running a tight and successful ship. Too bad Cecilia Jones ran him off. I suspect he'll run for county commissioner next time around and that will be a good thing. Remember the stats and accountability you see reported all occurred on Bagby's watch.
Bagby is running for a seat on the Destin City Council. See Destin Log.
