I can't shag....I took lessons one time and the instructor said I put too much hip action into it (my shag was too facetious for him .....to shag your asset stays still...but your feet do the moving....my body prefers the cha cha or the rumba.......... Shag is too sedate for me......

I lived in SC for 5 years and never got it. I mean, it is not an Atlanta dance. Then one night my friend Chip Laurens from Charleston (SOB) showed me how. I can do it, but Big D still hasn't gotten it. I still can't twirl -- too klutzy for that. Shagging is a great skill to have when you go to resorts along the NC/SC/GA coast (plus Amelia Island), including our old favorite place (The Cloister) on bingo night.

Let me put it this way...I choose NOT to shag...I find it boring! I have seen too many stuffed shirts get out there and act like big shots shagging...it is a personal choice...lets just leave it at that.....;-)

I hear ya. I just always felt like an outsider in SC until I learned how to shag. They always looked at me as if I were uncivilized when I danced in any other manner.

Shag dancing looks MUCH harder than the bump. I looked it up on youtube because I didn't know what shag dancing is - looks like you actually have to coordinate with a partner and know some real steps. The shag would be harder to do with a jello shot or pudding shot in your hand.

this is all very true, Paula... It IS very complicated...and if you don't do it right (ie...I "put too much booty " in it)....you are frowned upon....:shock:....South Carolinians take their shagging seriously....too seriously..........:funn:
