If you eliminate religion completely, do you think that would also eliminate the people who use religion for positive purposes? For example, if you eliminated religion wouldn't you also eliminate people like Mother Teresa and Gandhi?

Of course it would. As I've said before, if religion brings you comfort embrace it, but please don't try converting, others.

It seems as if there is a trend today among the mega churches to withdraw from society somewhat. They have acres upon acres of land with cafes, gyms they call family life centers, ball fields where they only play against their own teams, bowling alleys, movie theaters and so on.

I don't have a problem with a group wanting to gather with their own. What I have a problem with is the tax exempt status. Millions of dollars are collected to build these properties, why not let every country club in the nation receive the same tax benefits. The only part of these properties that should be exempt is the sanctuary and class rooms IMHO.

I'd like to know what you do that a religious person would think it was God's will to murder you?:dunno:

I bet you are for abortion on demand also.

I have no idea, we are speaking hypothetically. Maybe I was carrying the Koran.

Yes.

The only Christians that would consider the kind of violence you speak of would be very radical & out of touch with the Bible, God's word. The Koran does encourage violence & considers anyone who does not espouse their religion an infidel that should be eliminated. Christianity according to the New Testament calls for loving your enemies & turning the other cheek. I don't deny there are whackos out there, but they are the exception and not the rule.

Are you saying violent Muslims are the rule not the exception?:dunno:

Doesn't it all depend on how one interprets their religious text? I'm sure followers of the Koran do not read the same encouragement of violence as you do.

Or not. The Koran actually preaches tolerance and equality, considers Jesus to be a prophet and Christians and Jews as "people of the book", and the number one duty of followers of Islam is ................. to educate themselves.

Unfortunately the most vocal/publicized followers of Islam follow the ACTUAL teachings of Islam as much as the KKK follows the ACTUAL teachings of Jesus.

Benzair Bhutto was calling for a return to the TRUE Islam - one of education, scientific innovation, equality, and tolerance, instead of violence and they assassinated her!

Can you quote a section of the Quran that explicitly says this? The Quran actually says this............ "Surely those who have faith (in Islam) and the Jews and the Christians and the Sabaeans - whoever believes in God and the Last Day - their reward is with their Lord and they will neither fear nor grieve" (Quran 2:62 and 5:69)

and did you know the word infidel was actually created by Christians?

Islam is the completion of both Judaism and Christianity. Muslims believe that God revealed the Torah to Moses and the Gospel to Jesus. However, over time these teachings have become lost or corrupted. God's purpose in revealing the Quran was to provide guidance in its complete and final form. Islam teaches that Judaism and Christianity both contain truth and are both based on revelation from God; however followers of these religions have mixed in man-made teachings and doctrines.

I disagree, and I think Mango's and Scooter's comments help my argument. I think Gandhi and Teresa would be out there doing good in the world regardless of whether religion existed because that was their calling. Religion is not to blame here, it's the people who warp it into something that it's not that are to blame. If we really want to bring an end to extremism, my suggestion would be to leave religion alone and concentrate on eliminating the things that are the root of the extremist problem - poverty, squalor, and oppressive regimes.
