I see it used most often when there is a disgreement :rotfl:
Is it used to disagree, but still be buds kind of thing?

And, since we're here:

:D someone said it was a smart a$$, but I just digg the big grin.

 this one looks more to me like be baffled, which is when I use it.....others do not.
 I've never seen this one used
 this one is a wee bit crazy?? I don't see him used much either

:bicycle: I like this one, but not sure what it means

And, this :ninja: might be my new fav!! Digg him. Reminds of, "You little yellow....." in the Pink Panther.

 can be used arrogantly and sarcastically in a disagreement. It can be used to say  Hey we're over here, come back to us! You are so wrong and we are so right.

Hey DD

 i use it as a general hey and also "even though I am disagreeing with you, we can still be cheerful" approach. Interesting how even the smilies have different meanings to different people! Now I will wonder if people are taunting me  when they do that.

By the way, has only one meaning. This too. :pissed:

I LOVE :bicycle: but as for the right uses? You know it when you see it.

I roll my eyes , blush  and shrug :dunno: a lot IRL so I tend to use those smilies more than most ...

One I HAVEN'T yet seen used is this one!
