Have you ever worked for Wal-Mart? I did for 2 hellish months. I was told with a straight face and all seriousness that it was better to apply for Medicare than to pay for their worthless insurance. With the starting pay I would qualify. If you watch the Wal-Mart propaganda showing Sam in his old beat up pick up truck then yes it all sounds wonderful. In fact Sam Walton was at best a con artist. His "Made in America" campaign was nothing more than marketing. IIRC he bought a couple of truck loads of shirts one time from an American company. Otherwise he was dumping money into the Chinese economy by the smiley bag full.

This weekend we went to the Wal-Mart in PCB. I haven't felt that dirty in quite some time. We have been able to go without Wal-Mart for well over a year. Everything we used to purchase at Wal-Mart can be found right here on 30A. Granted it may cost a little more, but the money stays here. Wal-Mart doesn't help people save money, it bilkes them for every last penny while giving the false illusion of providing a quality of life.
To each his own and I think it is obvious yours is not mine. Despite what you think, Walmart is an icon of American capitalism. But then, maybe you're more into the socialist state concept.

What makes a job at Walmart appealing to your son? I would REALLY like to know because they certainly are not at the upper end of the pay scale, don't offer benefits, and go out of their way to keep you from working full time.

My dislike of Walmart is based on their business practices, their treatment of staff, the quality of their products, and the amount of tax dollars that they as a company cost us all by "working the system." There are many other less quantifiable reasons why I dislike them, but as far as those listed above I am on very solid and well supported ground.

Maybe he lives in a small town and since Wal-Mart ran his business out of town he's looking to replace that income by becoming a "shift leader" in the department that replaced his small business. :dunno:

Of course WalMart offers benefits. Its health insurance particpation rate is the highest in its sector. Sadly, WalMart has been villified at the hands of the unions with the help of many politicians, activists and journalists.

I wish everyone here would print out the first post and tape it next to their computer screen.

"Walmart this" or "Walmart that" isn't the issue.

While we all bicker amongst ourselves, there are laws being written that will change our future. And these laws aren't always passed the day after the election.

I think after the last firework has hit the ground, many folks are gonna realize that a president is just a fall guy, to a certain extent. It's partially our contempt and self-centeredness (new word:D) that has helped get us "this far".

Why does it exist?

Interesting debate on Wal Mart. While I am not a big fan of Wal Mart, and probably end up there no more than once or twice per year, they would not exist if Americans did not have an apetite for what it is offering.

I feel the same way when I turn on the television and see all of the "reality"programs on every channel. Should I be angry at the people who produce this, or dismayed by the fact that apparently someone is watching?

I am not sure that we should concern ourselves too much over oursourcing. We typically outsource work that takes little skill and training to India and China. I hope that including a link is O.K. as this (somewhat dated) article from the National Center for Policy Analysis provides interesting information regarding how much we outsource vs. insource.

Tell this to all the out of work people! I would love to know how many more jobs have been lost to foreign countries after 2004 when that article was written!!

That article is pure fiction. There is not one source cited in those "facts" presented.

America

The biggest issue I have with all of this is what is wrong with Americans making thing for Americans and other countries! We used to be proud that our country made what we needed...we need to have that back! I think it is an insult to less educated individuals to say that alot of the jobs lost to overseas are the lower paid non skilled jobs. I'm sure right now there are alot of college degreed individuals wishing that they could find a job...any job!! I'm tired of always seeing labels that say Made in (other than the USA)!!!
