We are taking several dishes and will eat with our friends, at 4:00 p.m. today. Kinda late for us, but when someone else offers to struggle a cold, slimy bird into an oven, I'll take what is offered. I will try to resist asking that she slap together a turkey sandwich for me on the side! The leftovers are my favorite part of Thanksgiving. I have made the incomparable Southern cornbread stuffing, an old favorite cranberry sauce made with Grand Marnier, and a sweet per-tay-ter pie. The Yankee husband made fun of it on our first Thanksgiving together, so I made a sweet potato and a pumpkin. Ever since, nothing but sweet potato will do for him. Now for a story...
When my dad was seven, the family (of 14, mind you) had picked all the cotton and Dad had the luxury of riding to town with his father to take the cotton to the gin. Dad had been working since very early in the morning, with no breakfast, and was feeling a little woozy for it. Sat up in the wagon, listing hard to port as they drove along the clay roads on the way to Clayton, AL. His dad took notice and when they reached town, he gave Dad a nickel, told him to go into the drugstore and get himself a Co-Cola and a piece of pie. A first for my Dad. Dad walked into that drugstore and the lady said, "What'll it be, son?" He replied, "I want a Co-cola and a piece of pie, please ma'am." The waitress replied, "What kinda pie do you want?" Dad looked at her in amazement and said, "Sweet per-tay-ter...what do you think pie is made of?" Have a good one, SoWallers!
