We're eating Thanksgiving dinner at my in-law's home and they ONLY make stuffing (and it is stuffed in the cavity) and it IS HORRIBLE. (They're Yankees.) Otherwise, my MIL is a very good cook. In all honesty, I can't even touch the white bread stuffing, even with lots of gravy. You can hardly get it to fall off the serving spoon!! My SIL (also a Yankee) always feels sorry for me missing the Southern food, so she makes me a mean choc. pecan pie!!! No one else will touch it.

My grandmother always STUFFED the bird with DRESSING (I'm being fair here). She buried the heart in the bird too, and my mom and her twin sister would fight over it since they always accused each other of getting the bigger piece. There were a few years I couldn't eat the dressing after the Battle for the Heart.

Now mom makes a batch of dressing out of the bird without organs thank God. Her sister lives in Lexington (and oddly enough her brother lives in Sandestin now), so there are no more heart battles.

I am doing the sides this year which hopefully will cut down on the "martyr mother" factor. I got tired of having her insist on having the meal, then complain about how much work it was! I'm sure messing with the turkey and will be enough material for her to work with though, and she will have to take to the bed from the work.

So now y'all have heard about my dysfunctional family holiday (and I should write a book), I'm going to look at the posted menus and get some fresh ideas!

Yes, I printed out some menus from the Regional Menu thread from a while back. Will be making Beach Runner's cherry pie; cranberry & pecan salad w/ lemon vinaigrette; & the lemon-garlic green beans.

We are going to my sister in laws. Since my Mom lives in Florida we've always spent Thanksgiving with the in laws. It's actually really nice. Very little dysfunction and my kids look forward to it so much. My SIL and MIL are great cooks so they collaborate on the meal. I bring a broccoli casserole and a dessert and they do the rest. We usually have:

Appetizers:
olives, carrots, celery, shrimp cocktail, pickles, stuffed mushrooms, spinach dip w/ pumperknickle

Main course:
Turkey
Dressing oyster and plain...thank God.
Green bean casserole
broccoli cheese casserole
sweet potato casserole
mashed potatoes...sometimes mixed with sour cream
cauliflower and cheese sauce
Cranberry something...it changes from relish to sauce to salad
various salads...either 7 layer or mandarin orange almond oriental something.
Lots of pies, cheesecake and other desserts
YUM, it all sounds so good and I truly appreciate all the hard work they put into it.
