This is so coincidental. I am watching Walk The Line right now.
LOL...love the movie too. I got the new CD for Christmas -- it is cool to hear Springsteen singing with her and think about her Dad singing those songs...

As an elderly gentleman told me in a small French town, that without the Brits and Americans these young French might be speaking German.

Well I'm trying to learn German, so keep those Americans and Brits away from me.

I took a lot of trips in the 60's but where I went wasn't on any map.

Perhaps the ultimate experience is spending time at a gay biker bar in Toulouse high on local fungi.

Who knew that taking the night train to save on lodging, making your lunch from items at the breakfast buffet, paying $12 to share a room with 7 strangers, and washing your socks in the sink was so elitist? :dunno:

17 of our 50 states share a border with a foreign country - travel that requires a passport is not limited to a luxury European vacation for a family of 4 with $$$ air fare - in many cases it's a cheap road trip.

I've never stayed in a hotel in Canada - that's what tents are for. And in Mexico I was at my friend's grandmother's house - except for one night where we moved to a hotel to make room for family in town for the wedding.

Travel does not have to be expensive - a foreign country can be far cheaper than a vacation in Sowal.

Some border states like Michigan offer an 'enhanced driver's license' that is accepted as proof of citizenship at land border crossings with Mexico and Canada. So they typical Michigan 19 year old or person headed to see the "Windsor ballet" doesn't need a passport for the usual hookers and blow. (Okay, it's actually mostly for the full nudity strip clubs that can serve alcohol, drinking age of 19, and legal purchase of Cuban cigars, with only a few taking advantage of Ontario's decriminalization of prostitution)

It would appear that you are doing your part to increase the appeal of foreign travel at least among a certain segment of the population.

What was interesting to me about the article I posted, is that many Americans, even when they can afford to...can get away, don't have elderly or sick relatives or children or whatever...even then, many choose to stay home. I am just curious about that--that's all.
.

My Grandfather lived to be 103 years old and never once stepped foot on an airplane.
He lived most of his life in NYC and owned a home on the water on City Island. Around the corner was a boat house and he made many friends, watched them die, owned many boats, knew when and where the fish ran, which rocks to step on without falling, the best place to put a lobster trap, taught all his grandchildren how to collect collect clams with out feet, then backfloat them into a bucket, shopped every Monday on Arthur Avenue....he was never at home, but having adventures with his family and friends, just went to bed at home.

I'm sure someone across the world was lived a very similar life and was very happy. There's a lot to be said for those types of memories and experiences as opposed to visiting a place that you may never return to again.

Because of the vast natural resources and the amount of property we have right here locally, many Americans have second homes and recreational vehicles to use as outlets for family gatherings, stress relief, and quiet, peaceful enjoyment of nature.
