Cases of the deadliest form of skin cancer are on the rise among young women, but not young men, according to a study published Thursday in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Analyzing government data on Caucasian men and women ages 15 to 39, Mark Purdue and his colleagues at the National Cancer Institute found that, between 1980 and 2004, annual cases of melanoma among young women increased by 50 percent from 9.4 cases per 100,000 women to 13.9 cases per 100,000 women.
Researchers also found a greater increase in young women having thicker and metastatic melanomas in which the cancer spreads to other areas of the body during that time period.
The incidence of melanoma among young men did not change over this time period, the authors noted in a press release.

Can you all think of one reason melanoma is more common in young women and not young men??? Just walk into a tanning salon and see you patronizes them. A Scandinavian study recently showed than use of indoor tanning beds was highly linked to melanoma in women under the age of 40.

I am spear-heading a movement for class action lawsuits against tanning salons, tanning bed manufacturers, and the indoor tanning association. PM me if you or a loved-one had melanoma and used indoor tanning beds at home or in a salon.

Suing them for what? Failure to test their product for twenty years to see if cases of cancer would increase? Advertising that they were safer? Just curious as these stats seem pretty obvious to me as well as the results.

I tried a tanning bed once...
I got burned. But see... it wasn't a red, visible burn. It felt more like a freaking chemical burn. I was screaming hysterically in pain for days and I swear that I will never, ever use a tanning bed again. Just thinking about it makes me panic considering what kind of damage may have occurred. My Irish skin just can't handle it. I won't ever let my kids use one either, they're Irish/Norwegian, can you imagine?!?

I don't think suing is the answer. Unless they were telling people that it was perfectly safe. The salon DID tell me it was safe even after looking at my very fair skin, but that doesn't mean every salon and manufacturer is irresponsible... Most of these girls are hell-bent on frying themselves because that's the "look" that our society has determined is most desirable. They don't care how many times their mama tells them it's going to kill them, they're immortal. And Cosmo says it's hot. :roll:

I'm just going to work with my white self and hopefully live a lot longer...

I do want to say that there are reports right now that show how deficient we are in Vitamin D. The best way to get Vitamin D is from the sun. Research recommend 10-15 minutes in the sun w/ in 1-2 hours of 12:00 w/ 60% of your skin exposed. So, forget the tanning beds and head for the sun w/ out sunscreen for a few minutes each day and lower your risk of colon cancer that way.

You can get more than enough vitamin D without going outdoors in prime UV time sans sunscreen. No need to fry for vitamins!

After speding 6 hours and 330 miles on my bike, yesterday, riding home from Sowal and ejoying the great weather, I've decided that I'm going to start a class action suit against God for not snuffing out the sun. I mean, really. He knows that the sun causes cancer, yet, He continues to let it shine every day despite the ramifications...

Come on...It's no secret that tanning beds can be a contributor to skin cancer, but these people are chosing to use them despite everything that has been proven.

I went to one years ago and they made me sign all sorts of documents that basically said "duh, everything can cause cancer if overused so I won't sue if I get skin cancer".
