Swimming with Seven Manatees in Sandestin

SoWal local Brock Ellis had the experience of a lifetime recently when he got to swim with a group of seven manatees along the shore at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Brock was able to capture exciting photos and video (below) of the manatees.

It's not uncommon to see manatees swimming east in South Walton in the Spring as they migrate up from Southwest Florida, and again swimming west to get back down south in the Fall. Brock works on the beach so has a front row seat for all the great wildlife action in the Gulf.

Underwater Life on the Reef at Grayton Beach

This movie is a departure from my usual Chicken Coop artificial reef movies recorded in the Grayton Beach area. The Chunk Gully is a large area of natural bottom consisting of corals, sponges and other reef organisms covering an exposed limestone base a short distance from the beach.

I discovered this specific area of the Chunk Gully in 2013 and enjoyed some spectacular bottom fishing for grouper and red snapper on it. Wondering what the bottom looked like, I recently dropped my homemade GoPro underwater rig on the reef for a movie we could all enjoy.

SoWal Style - Panoramic Views in Dune Allen Beach

This fabulous vacation rental home sleeps 27 and is appropriately named "Forever Views", located on a high bluff, in the heart of Dune Allen Beach, Florida. It's a short stroll to Dune Allen's public beach access and local favorite Stinky's Fish Camp. It's also less than five minutes from the Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club, and lots of great dining and shopping at Gulf Place

SoWal People: Jeff Talbert of the Florida Park Service

Jeff Talbert loves the outdoors and he loves photography. Being a Resource Management Park Services Specialist for the state of Florida and stationed at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park gives him unique opportunities to combine his interests. Jeff often is in a great position to photograph South Walton wildlife in the park. We've enjoyed his photography for years and are happy to share a bit.
