SoWal Summer Junior Lifeguard Program 2018
March 19, 2018 by SoWal Staff
It’s time to start planning summer activities for the kids in SoWal, and the South Walton Fire District has the perfect opportunity for them to learn better beach safety, develop a skill set for the future and develop new friendships.
Participants will learn a range of beach safety skills including: surf lifesaving, personal safety, sun safety, surf conditions, resuscitation and first aid. In order to sign up for the class, participants must meet swimming qualifications with proper freestyle form. Ages 9-11 must be able to swim 100 yards in 4 minutes or less, 12-13 must swim 150 yards in 5 minutes or less and 14-15 year olds must swim 200 yards in 6 minutes or less. All ages must be able to tread water for a minimum of 1 minute. A swim test will be conducted on Saturday May 19 and 26 at Ed Walline Beach Access. Parents must attend the tryouts, and a payment of $185 per child will be collected after the swim tryouts are complete.
The junior lifeguard program runs from June 5-21 and July 10-26. Activities are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with a morning session for ages 9-11 and afternoon session for 12-15 year olds. Class registration is first come, first served with a limited number of 60 spots per June/July session. To register, fill out the attached application form and return it to the South Walton Fire District via email at juniors@SWFD.org, fax at 850-267-3294 or mail/drop-off to the South Walton Fire District located at 911 North County Highway 393.
