Cancerous is a strong word for someone who doesn't attach personal beliefs...And BTW, the Economist is the Time magazine of the business community...And I do profess to watch Fox exclusively...

The Economist is much more than business and isn't littered with ads. I'm not trying to sell it to you. It just is what it is. No frills, no shocks, just solid facts and reporting from experts in every corner of the globe.

Cancerous is a strong word, agreed. And there are strong consequences for getting wrapped up too tightly in opinions of others, especially when they are paid to give them in a entertaining format.

I don't have strong personal beliefs attached to what I get from watching tv is my point, because regardless of the program they are ultimately selling a product. I do have strong beliefs that the public shouldn't take them so seriously. A fine, but important difference.

TNjed,
I am with you in that the Economist is ONE of several excellent magazines that print many opinion pieces from experts from all over the world!

Skunkape,
I know Congress' ratings are dirt poor and so they should be - cannot seem to remember a time when so many were so spineless. BTW: I have NO problem being fair and balanced despite appearances at time to the contrary!

I subscribe to The Economist and it is not that. It's a great magazine, but they still let their Bush hatred get in the way of "solid facts and reporting".

What if "Bush hatred" is actually the world's pulse and their articles merely reflect that?

I enjoy most of it though and I'm glad to see you read it as well. But, regardless of mine or anyone's opinion on a single news source, I think we can agree it's important to get multiple perspectives. Especially the ones which challenge us to see something from viewpoints we hadn't yet considered.

I'm just pointing out a little media bias. Here is the poll just put out by Gallup:

From 5/10-13/07
Do you approve of the job congress is doing?
Approve29% Disapprove64% Not sure7%

Now, I know of no day watching CNN when the obligatory Bush's approval rating is "the worst since Martin van Buren" comment isn't made. Can you say the same for hearing "And Congress, whose approval ratings are currently at unprecedented lows among Americans, blah, blah, blah..."

And I like The Economist!

On the first paragraph (agree with the second), they've been on the anti-Bush bandwagon for some time, including when he was on everyone's good side.

I don't watch news but I see it in passing every now and then. Why do businesses blare FOX NEWS at you? Why was it wide open in the last Doctor's waiting room I sat in? I asked the receptionist if she thought it was bad for health and she blankly stared, wishing I was not there.

FOX is leading the way but all news is about fear now, even CNN. Fear sells. Fear keeps people watching. Fear makes them wait through commercials. Fear is the biggest reason people purchase and consume. Fear makes people and a society sick. I can smell it on my skin.

Let me plug 2 of my favorite informative television programs. Both are on PBS. Charlie Rose....and Frontline. OUTSTANDING and highly educational in addition to being entertaining. Tonite Charlie Rose is all about stem cell research. I, for one, am not that familiar with the difference between adult stem cell research versus embryo stem cell research. I hope I will find out tonite. AND the best thing is it won't interfere with American Idol !!!!

Love both of those shows as well.

BTW and FWIW: my best friend who was turkish was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 31 years old - she underwent a year of excruciating chemotherapy and a host of other procedures in the hopes of outliving it and finding a match for a bone marrow transplant. With her heritage it was practically impossible (and she was in Houston at excellent hospital whose name escapes me now!) - anyways she finally had bone marrow transplant with partial match, spent a month + in a bubble and nonetheless died. When her oncologist broke the news to us he was in tears and I was pregnant with my first child. He told me to harbor her stem cells from umbilical cord in the God forbid scenario that something would happen to our child - he also told us that in his eyes it was one of the most promising medical advances that could have major impact on different sorts of afflictions that can plague any of us.

We did this for our first and second child and I have turned on numerous friends to this. It is an insurance policy I hope I will never ever need but I am comforted by the fact that there are cells that can be harvested for our kids in a worse case scenario. I personally do wish the federal government would fund research but am comforted by the fact that at least a lot of private companies do. BTW - even I do feel strongly about this, I also do understand and respect that some people object on moral grounds, although I am of the belief that moral issues cannot really be legislated!
