I had mine yanked with no problems whatsoever. No swelling & virtually no pain. It didn't slow me down eating at all (although not much does!). My friend though was out of commission for about 3 days after hers came out. I think she was milking it!

Mermy before you decide...there are erupted wisdom teeth, and impacted wisdom teeth. If impacted, they are tissue impacted or bone impacted. (jdarg-look away) Fully erupted wisdom teeth are realtively easy to remove, the roots are shorter and the upper ones usually roll out. Recovery is fast with little puffiness if you take it easy and use ice the first 24 hours.

Tissue impacted is a bit harder, they make an incision in the gum, then remove the tooth. Bone impacted means they cut through the tissue, drill through the bone and remove the tooth, usually in peices. This is the one with the most difficult recovery time. But even then she may bounce back quicker than you think. Removal on Friday, she would feel good by Monday (maybe Tuesday if she didn't follow instructions to the letter). It's important to follow the directions exactly, ice on and off as directed, the swelling equates to pain. No vigorious spitting ( but don't swallow the blood, makes the tummy sick), don't smoke, don't use a straw. You are trying to not dislodge the blood clot in the socket, this is the dry socket you've heard of and the nerve is protected by the blood clot. (sorry jdarg I told you to look away)

If Fyl has erupting teeth that are trying to come in she may trap food between the tissue and the tooth as it tries to erupt, this is painful and can lead to infection. She's teething just like when she was a baby so it's uncomfortable, but not an emergency. Just be extra diligent to keep that clean, a water pik helps or rinse with a peroxide mouth rinse to bubble the trapped debris. If she has bone impacted teeth they can actually be sitting in her jaw sideways with the biting surface of the tooth pushing on the last molar, leaving it can damage that molar. Even if they are not impacted they can crowd the existing teeth shoving them out of alignment and messing up her occlusion. If it messes up her bite, she'll get headaches etc. So it may be best to not wait too long. I'd try to get her set up by Christmas break just in case.

My daughter had all 4 removed at once, all impacted. Two were soft tissue impacted the other bone impacted and sideways. The bone impacted was what caused her the most pain. Removed Friday, nasty day, lots of meds and ice ready. She was up on her feet Monday with little swelling. I watched her like a hawk the first 24 hours I'd seen too many dry sockets in our office and didn't want that. Sorry that was long. Let us know what you decide.

I've had all mine either pulled or cut out in varying manners over the course of three procedures so I can speak with some authority on this topic.

I'd first recommend going to WebMD and searching using "wisdom tooth extraction". Click the second link named the same. This will give you a very good overview of the procedures, reasons for removal, and risks. After reading this, speak with the dentist to get a detailed assessment of your daughter's situation and his/her recommendations for treatment.

I was just about your daughter's age when my dentist recommended removal as a preventative measure. Long story short, I decided after having the first two done (one at a time) that I would prefer the next two be done in a reactive instead of proactive manner. :D Ten years later, I regretted that decision. Wish I had them done when first suggested.

Sorry Mermy, I can't be much help. The dentist has been after Tyler for over a year to have his removed, he never seems to have the TIME, pleeezee. Anyway, I made a deal with Tyler and they are coming out on Christmas vacation whether he likes it or not.

I would do it this summer. Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks from college are waaaaay to busy with seeing friends. That last summer before college is fun, but the breaks when all her friends are home after being at different schools- now THAT is when she will want to be ready for action! She can spare a few days at the end of the summer- might keep her home long enough to pack too!;-)

I am a freak of nature- I never had the bottom wisdom teeth. They just weren't there. My tops were removed last fall, and at my age, they practically fell out.

Cheering, thanks for worrying if I would get grossed out. I don't get grossed out, but I do get disgusted. If you would like to discuss extremely personal health issues, either call me or send me an e-mail.

I  you Jen-ay.

And your right about the holiday breaks being the best time for those reunions. Thanksgiving eve was always my kids favorite night.

My dentist told me I had to get mine out soon as possible a few years ago. Then he did Xrays because he wanted to point the teeth out to me- only to find- I had NO wisdom teeth- how in the ?? :dunno:

Anyways- I'm not complaining. Why? Cause my sister had hers out years ago and I just remember her throwing up blood for a day. Gross.

THE SOONER THE BETTER. If you've got them of course... :D
