The basic premise is that genome sequencing has advanced to the point that it is incontrovertible that the gene sequence for our closest relative, the bonobo, has a nearly identical DNA sequence to ours. There is a hitch though. Apes have 24 pairs of chromosomes, while humans have only 23. Amazingly, human chromosome # 2 appears to show the unmistakable character of the fusion of two ape chromosomes.
