I no longer stay in Dune Allen
Great. That makes it okay, then.

Sorry. I missed those events. Is there a make-up date so I can keep my Christian card? I would hate to miss out on slaying a few infidels.

You wouldn't know a real Christian person if she hit you over the head with her shoe. Which she may do next time she's at the beach.

I think this one Christian has told one gay what she thinks of him, repeatedly, in just the last 12 hours.

Thanks a lot. I'm glad we cleared up how you really feel about it.
I think you should capitalize Gay if you are going to use him in that manner.

Here I go again with my .02. To swgb, et. al., NoHall makes the point that some people use that broad brush to paint all peoples of a group the same way. It could be Dems, Reps, Christians, Gays, soccer moms, etc. It is usually done because of fear or loathing...but isn't it because of not really understanding? I see it all the time in life and on sowal.com. Try to keep in mind that within these groups are individuals with a mind of their own and some great qualities that you might learn from. I know not everyone will think the way I do, so be it...I live in a country where I can speak my beliefs, even if they are hurtful and incorrect. One last thing...I have asked this before...do y'all as Republicans and Democrats believe everything your party stands for?

That said, I am extremely wary of both sides of the extreme beliefs...especially the "right wing Christian conservative" group that has in my mind become the judge and jury for America. They do not speak for me as a Christian. God gave me faith and along with that also free will,a brain, and a mouth to use for myself and to use for good and to make mistakes. I hope you and NoHall will respond as I have almost put words in your mouths here. That was not my intention.

Kitty--I appreciate your thoughts. I am puzzled by the "right wing Christian conservative" group. I do not understand how a "Christian" group does not consider "the least of these" and the charge that we have to "be stewards of the Earth". I was pleased to learn that one Christian group was speaking out for the environment, but they have not gotten much traction. And isn't it more important to care for people than it is to try and dictate personal decisions? I wonder how Gov Palin would feel if the government had mandated that she could not have her child? She deserves to be able to make that choice just as every other woman deserves the right to choose. I doubt that I would ever have been able to make a choice for an abortion--but, I would fight to the death to have that choice...and for every woman to have that choice.

How can sensible people let the far right ministers speak for them? or guide them in their choice of a candidate? How can a minister like Dr. Dobson actually have his people "pray for rain to spoil the Democratic convention outdoor speech?" Where is the love in that? Where was the love in the comment Pat Roberson made about Katrina being "God's punishment..."Don't these ministers have a higher calling than this?

This country has been better than this in the past. Our ancestors came to a wilderness to build a country where everyone would be treated as an individual with the freedom to choose how they live their lives. ..including how they choose to worship or not. It has not been an easy journey...we have made lots of mistakes, slavery being the more horrific but...

Men and women have given their lives...and are giving their lives today, to preserve our freedom and to bring freedom to others--sometimes whether they want it or not--how can we as individuals not honor the sacrifices of both our past and present by allowing equality to all our citizens, regardless of what religious belief they have or even if they have no religious belief.

This religious stuff is IMO responsible more than anything else for the polarization of the country...while Obama believes that "there is only one United States of America" and I believe will work to bring us together rather than dividing us...Senator McCain made a choice for his Vice President apparently to "rally the base of religious right supporters." I am disappointed in his decision; and I have been, if not an advocate, at least a supporter of him as a decent person..I just do not think he is the best person for the job.

There are so many qualified Republicans who would have made a good match for Senator McCain and, IMO added value to his ticket. The fact that he allowed the operatives of the right to persuade him, is very scary to me. If he will do this, then what else will he do to satisfy the extreme right?

Many say all of these is just politics...maybe it is, but the policies of our country are being formed by these politics...and, we the people will get the government we deserve. If we don't speak out to make a difference, those with their own agenda will do it for us. And, as you said, the religious right does not speak for me...that is not the Christianity I believe in.

We need to take our government back from the religious right IMO, and McCain could have done this had he made a different choice.

goodwitch...I have seen plenty of people use good for bad. Isn't hiding behind Christian "doctrine" and the Church socially acceptable in this country (and very very scary)? When did the church become a vessel for evil? Probably the beginning of time. But didn't Mr. Rove use this group and capitalize on the fear they could add to the equation? Politics makes for strange bedfellows.

yeah he did. It is in the Playbook he and his colleagues wrote. And, it is fear they use...it is scary. That's why I had hoped that McCain would be a different sort. I continue to be puzzled how otherwise intelligent folks can allow this fear to guide their decisions, especially as I have posted before, so many of the ones who are manipulated, are actually hurt by the polices that come from these fear tactics.

The basic premise is that genome sequencing has advanced to the point that it is incontrovertible that the gene sequence for our closest relative, the bonobo, has a nearly identical DNA sequence to ours. There is a hitch though. Apes have 24 pairs of chromosomes, while humans have only 23.

Ahhh, but not all humans have 23. Some humans have 24. ;-) Variations from the norm are what shake things up over time. Remember the girl in India who made the news earlier this year? She was born with four legs and four arms, mathematically like a spider. She was having surgery to remove the additional limbs in order to be functional. She couldn't walk otherwise. Anywho, what if over time, she had found and mated with someone else who had 8 limbs? That is how science works to create new species, naturally. We people tend to try and keep things in a no-grow box, or manipulate things to see what happens. I had a friend in college who was constantly working in the lab to genetically alter chickens to have four legs, and other crazy shi-ite. Kind of scary in the extreme sense, but also rather enlightening as to what makes things like they are, and a simple on/off switch can really shake things up a bit.

I don?t see why you think there has to be one side and one side only. That?s pretty absolute for a science based thought process. I don?t think there has to be two sides either, science takes us to a point but then at that end there is something greater. It?s the cause and effect of all the wonderful detail we see in life.

Mr. L, you?ll most likely have the chance to change your mind in the end, I wish you well. But, you can probably expect to have to put in some time at Celestial Sunday School before your life ever-after.

You have it half right and that?s OK for now. I?ll see you there and be sure to put in a good word.

Actually SJ I find that really interesting. The theory being that odd variations like that give rise to evolution in the event they are beneficial to survival. I wonder if by the same token their aren't a few 23 chromosome apes walking areound. Not that I want to see it happen, but would they be reproductively compatible with humans? Or would that 24 chromosome human be able to mate with apes? It's scary and it pushes the bounds of ethics to answer these questions, but it is enlightening as you say.

All I can say is that if there is something greater, more beautiful and wonderful at the core, does it really do it justice to teach it as an alternative to to a cold hard science in a public school? That's all I'm getting at. Too many people want to present creationism as the other side. Evolution is not meant to explain existence. To me that's something inexplicable no matter how you look at it, but I leave my mind open to it.

You made my point much more rationally than I did, and I appreciate it. As a group, the "right wing Christian conservatives" are skeery, but I know a lot of calm, collected Christians who do not act that way, think that way, vote that way, etc.

I apologize for allowing this to get my goat. It is my hope that in this close-knit community we will continue to regard (not judge) one another as individuals rather than some part of a group.
