Right here!
Yep, 17, pregnant and under the glare of the international media. Poor kid.

<Rasberry> I'm not feeling sorry for her one bit, this kid showed a complete lack of good judgement - five months ago she's out cating around with some boy having unprotected sex while her mother the governor is actively being considered for the V.P. spot? If I were her father I'd be reaming her a new one right now and then I'd ground her for life!

Yeah, but during that time, the teen years were more borderline adult years. Now, sociologically speaking, teen years are associated more closely with childhood and it's not until people are in their 20's that they get the chance to be considered adults.

Typically, the religious views behind pro-life also push for "no sex until marriage" and this doesn't obviously isn't the case. Yes, some kids have sex no matter what, but IMHO, this is also the result of a too busy, overachiever mama who doesn't have time to connect with her teenage daughter issue. I'm not even gonna mention the need that the baby has for his mother, especially with DS and she's obviously so busy that her position takes her away from her child at 5 days.

I'm not either pro-life or pro-choice, as I see both sides. If Roe vs. Wade had been a year earlier, there would be no OrganicMama, but I do not agree with the extreme viewpoints of the pro-life side. The issue lies much earlier and deeper than that, something that I don't think the religious right wants to deal with, like openly teaching our children (especially daughters) about respecting their bodies and about simple biology. Teenage sex will still happen, but at least the informed knowedge & choice is there.

Feeling bad for Bristol and the rest of Palin's kids right now. An uninvolved, extra busy mother leaves plenty of room for things like this.

OMG! Women with careers are all bad mothers? aaaaaaah! You probably didn't realize just how sexist that was when you wrote it, hopfully you realize it now!

THAT IS NOT WHAT I SAID AT ALL! My point is that being a mom, giving birth to a child with DS and going back to work 5 days later demonstrates a mother who values her position more than her children's needs. It has nothing to do with being a mom and having a career. I am all for that.

You're on witchhunt for sexism. How the hell can I be sexist when I am a woman with 3 children of my own, starting my own business???? However, I am also looking out for the needs of my kids, as most mothers with careers do. There is a reason for women wanting 12 week leave for kids and for other countries actually giving a year leave to working mothers. Newborn babies need their mothers. Is that sexist?:dunno:

You have no idea how much this will be debated. It's like throwing a grenade in the middle of the ever-present mommy wars.

Wow! and you know this how? I'm not sure if you are talking about the assassination threats which were made against Obama, or if you think McCain may get hit by Biden's commuter train.

My apologies, I should have said 6 years. McCain is 71 and the average life expectancy in the US is 77 years. I know that many like to point to his mother as some sort of geneological milestone that he'll be able to obtain, but I doubt his mother has ever had the stresses equal too or as prolonged as the President. Look at pictures of any past President from election to departure, the stress ages them much faster. If McCain made it 4 years he's going to look like the crypt keeper.

Looks like Dad is going to go one better. He's cocking the shotgun as we speak so she can enter a marriage that probably won't work out.

I so agree, DemoLady.
Kids need more than abstinence-only education.
Palin's Gubernatorial Questionnaire
3. Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?
JB: We should not exclude abstinence-until-marriage education programs.
SP: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.
We need to move forward, not backward.
Cil, I agree with you and DemoLady totally. Maybe Govervor Palin's attitude toward honest sex education in high school is partially to blame for her 17 year old daughter's pregnancy. I mean hormones are hormones, and we need to explain to kids what is actually happening in their own bodies and minds. Abstinence-only programs are the equivilent of loaded guns aimed directly at the youth of our nation. I had very explicit sex education taught to me in high school in the '60s and it kept me from making some very destructive decisions. One good choice I made due to a good education regarding sex was waiting a little longer to engage in sexual activity. Burying your head in the sand won't accomplish the goal intended by the proponents of this policy...it is well proven that it only exacerbates the problem.

This country is so backwards with respect to granting leave to pregnant women.... it is still a massive financial burden to many and the laws here are not helpful - in England, FATHERS are even granted paid leave when their wives give birth!!

Yes it sounded very sexist to me, although obviously I realize you didn't intend it to be. We have no evidence that Sarah Palin is a bad mother. I just hope this election isn't "headed down that road".

You're on witchhunt for sexism.

I think keeping an eye out and pouncing on anything even vaguely sexist is important in light of how Hillary was treated by the main street media during her campaign.
