For anyone who doubts there is a radical right wing movement within the Republican Party and that they had direct influence in Palin's selection, then do some research on The Council for National Policy.

No matter what your political persuasion, if you care about this country and our freedoms...you owe it to yourselves and your family to be concerned about this
approach to our government IMO.

And, before you throw things at me, I am not talking about all Republicans here any more than I was speaking of all Christians in the other thread.

I only have two shoes, and I'm throwing them both at SWGB. Thanks for being clear.

As for the Council for National Policy, I'm skeered to look.

The freedoms you have in America allow people to associate. If the rest of us sit around and allow something like this to happen............

A very good reason for everyone to educate themselves and get involved.

I have not seen a movement to start morning prayer in school. But if the students wish to voluntarily pray, I am not seeing the problem. Just like they can voluntarily not pray. This freedom thing should go both ways. But government corporate prayer is certainly a no-no.
So if some in the class want to get down on their prayer mats and pray to Mecca while your having your personal relationship with Jesus, you will find that carnival atmosphere perfectly conducive to education? When do the Wiccans get their time? During recess? Their very outdoorsy you know. Maybe we could split the public school into little religious wings, you know....Allah Hall or Rapture Library. Put the atheists and agnostics in shop class so they can construct some ball bats to make sure some actual learning takes place.

As long as they are not intefering with the educational process, so be it. They have lunch, recess, time between classes, and from what I hear about block scheduling from the students, copious amounts of free time to "study".

If someone insists on teaching theology/creationism in Science class, they shouldn't be teaching at a public school (or that class).

Likewise people who want to pray during the school day can do it privately/on their own time, not impose THEIR beliefs on everyone and take time out of the already short school day.

There is plenty of time in the day/week for you to teach your personal beliefs to your kids w/o messing w/ everyone's education!

Everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinions and religions, but they are NOT entitled to impose those beliefs on others or limit a public school's instruction because of their personal religious beliefs.

A little tolerance and common sense goes along way. Your kids aren't going to convert because of a Social Studies lesson about World Religions or *gasp* critical thinking, but we are going to continue to lag behind other countries when we spend so much of a school's time and energy appeasing religious zealots and teaching religious ideas in science class.

so it's the Wiccans at recess, how about the Amish use the library since they tend to quietly sit there, the satanic crew can use the theatre, and the Evangelicals can meet on the roof because it's closest to God. How many votes does weaseling religion into public school get a politician nowadays?

No where have I said that we should be teaching religion in schools. But why is it that tolerance includes everything but religion? If students have free time, and are not interfering with the educational process, and want to pray, what is the problem? We have Youth for Christ groups meeting in the schools now. And if the Wiccans want to put together a group, I do not see a problem with it. Freedom is an interesting thing.

But to make my position clear, I am FOR allowing voluntary student led prayer in schools. I am FOR allowing voluntary student led prayer at sporting events, and if you read the paper, you know that I feel if someone wants to put on a Christmas program and sing about Jesus. More power to them, after all it is Christmas.

Vote for me or not, that is how I feel. At least I am willing to stand for what I believe instead of avoiding the question.

Something tells me championing the Autumnal Equinox Drum Circle around the flag pole would not garner votes around here.

Yes, Wrobert is definitely leading the charge to convert our public schools w/ his statement of "let them do what they want during their free time."

I'd LOVE to see the mushroom cloud of hysteria that will appear if the Wiccans want a flagpole meeting!

It seems that this thread's "prayer" and that other thread's "sex ed" are interchangeable terms according to one's political bent. Prayer in school for one side with no sex-ed, sex- ed in school for the other side with no prayer. Maybe find a religion in which making the sexo, regardless of marriage status, glorifies God and then kids and grownups can pray in the library, cafeteria, bathroom, principal's office, stairwell, gym, locker room, shower (you get the idea) 2 or 3 times a day as their stamina, modesty, and class schedule allow.
