so, we're in the market for a new car. took mine in this am for an oil change, they came out and said i had a blown head gasket. i have a 99 discovery II, to replace the gasket would be $2500, so it wouldn't be ideal to replace it at this time, because more than likely, i would turn right around and put more into it. so, now we have to decide on a new or used car. i love/loved my disco and would love to have an lr3, but i'm going to try to go a little more practical, i think. maybe the outback or saab route.(are those more practical?) my question is, what kind of car do you own, and why do you love it or not like it?

I'd go used and older.

:rotfl:...Is that Fred Flintstone?

aggieb...I have an RX330 (2004) and it has been a great car for me. I LOVE the Lexus service and when I get a new car, it will be hard for me to look elsewhere, because of that service!

I'd probably look for something used in the Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda line if I were in your shoes. I take it the vehicle needs to have some room? I'd be thinking 4 runner or even Rav4. I'd even consider a small truck (twin cab).

Luv my Ho! But, who doesn't love a good Ho??

Not crazy about my Touareg; I only sport around in it when I need to be fancy!

I used to love driving my Scout (with the roof off) to the nicest restaurants in town and valet it~~~~~~~~~~the Ho is almost there!!

My question is why did he tell you that the head gasket was blown? Were you having problems? If not, take it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion. A blown gasket is a big deal. You would have known it for sure. You won't find water in the oil because it boils out, but there would be oil in the water. You would have reduced power, too, and a lot of times your exhaust will get really steamy or smokey.

I'd be a little suspect since all you took it in for was an oil change. If your car was not acting up in any way, please take it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion.

I'm just playin' devil's advocate here...

Ditto to that. Get a second opinion. If the car's not giving you any problems you might just as well keep driving it. Find out the book value on the car too before you pour money into it.

it happened on the way there, i guess, because he came up and asked me if it over heated on my way there. i said no, why? he said because you are leaking antifreeze.:D i was due @ 95,000 miles for an oil change i was 700 miles over. the truck has been giving me problems for years, especially the radiator and radiator hose(s). i used to have it serviced at the land rover dealership in buckhead, but i found a certified LR mechanic in chattanooga that took really good care of it. i hate to get rid of it but what else can i do, ya know? i'm tired of forkin' out money left and right when i could be paying for a newer, more reliable car. i don't know where else to take it, they are land rover certified. he said he's just going to seal it:dunno: and so i called my mechanic in chattanooga and he said that, that's not a good idea, because that's hard to fix. i guess i'll just pick it up when it's ready and go trade it. :dunno:i feel guilty, but.........i'm so confused and mr. aggb doesn't know jack about cars. i know i could spare y'all but i'm just unsure what route to take here. i looked at the honda pilot and the volvo xc90. a car isn't going to be suitable for us, because we have 2 dogs and one is a monster.

Dang! I would be tempted to get a second opinion just because you don't know this guy or this shop. If your regular guy told you this, wouldn't think twice.

My Gr. Wagoneer was overheating just a tad, took it in and they serviced the A/C, hoses and waterpump maybe? Then a few days later this white smoke came billowing out its butt and totally smoked out the car behind me at a traffic light.

Took it back and got the news that the engine had seen its better days, but it had 175K miles on it. I think they were going to have to rebuild it? I didn't want to deal with that, (seemed pricey for the age and mileage of the truck) sold it and bought the Ho two days later.
