I'm not even sure I would drive it off his dirt......have it towed to someone else for the second opinion.

I spoke with my car mechanic, MANgo, who just replaced the gasket on our truck, BTW, and he said if it is leaking then what your mechanic is suggesting is putting in a sealant that runs through, but it is not a corrective action, only may buy you more time. How much, depends on the size of the leak. You risk getting stuck somewhere. You will have to watch the antifreeze very carefully or you'll burn out the motor. Replacing the head gasket took him all day and it is a big job. We almost thought about getting a new truck ourselves and I did not have to pay anywhere near $2500.

But make sure there is a problem with it first. You will either notice the antifreeze on the ground --a small- large puddle- or it may burn off and not drip, but you will notice a distinct smell.

Did he run a compression check? If a head gasket is blown you will most likely have low pressure in one or more cylinders ( would probably be zero or close to it ) . Go see Henry at Henry's Import Repair on Front Beach Rd, I found him to be very good with all sorts of import cars (233-2345 )

it happened on the way there, i guess, because he came up and asked me if it over heated on my way there. i said no, why? he said because you are leaking antifreeze.:D i was due @ 95,000 miles for an oil change i was 700 miles over. the truck has been giving me problems for years, especially the radiator and radiator hose(s). i used to have it serviced at the land rover dealership in buckhead, but i found a certified LR mechanic in chattanooga that took really good care of it. i hate to get rid of it but what else can i do, ya know? i'm tired of forkin' out money left and right when i could be paying for a newer, more reliable car. i don't know where else to take it, they are land rover certified. he said he's just going to seal it:dunno: and so i called my mechanic in chattanooga and he said that, that's not a good idea, because that's hard to fix. i guess i'll just pick it up when it's ready and go trade it. :dunno:i feel guilty, but.........i'm so confused and mr. aggb doesn't know jack about cars. i know i could spare y'all but i'm just unsure what route to take here. i looked at the honda pilot and the volvo xc90. a car isn't going to be suitable for us, because we have 2 dogs and one is a monster.
land rover should go to the car crusher...you got more use out of it than most owners. it will be needy if you try to fix it.

DING DING DING!

Alarm! You can't "just seal" a head gasket. You have to pull the heads off of the engine and replace the gaskets.

It may be something as simple as a bad thermostat...a 5 dollar part. The things this guy has told you don't add up. My 66 Mustang will start spewing water within minutes if I get it into stop and go traffic. Some cars just do.

He may be right, but this is all too suspect to me...
in addition to the gasket the heads may have to be planed flat at a machine shop if the overheating was severe. sometimes this is done after the first "fix".

I was just doing a little research on them. For one they are very expensive to begin with. J.D. power give a lot of the models a terrible reliability rating. Overheating, coolant and oil leaks, and blown gaskets is a common occurrence. The people happiest with them know how to fix cars and enjoy spending a lot of tiime doing so.
