My question is why did he tell you that the head gasket was blown? Were you having problems? If not, take it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion. A blown gasket is a big deal. You would have known it for sure. You won't find water in the oil because it boils out, but there would be oil in the water. You would have reduced power, too, and a lot of times your exhaust will get really steamy or smokey.

I'd be a little suspect since all you took it in for was an oil change. If your car was not acting up in any way, please take it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion.

I'm just playin' devil's advocate here...
Great advice! I'd get a second opinion just to see if you could get a better price on such a $ repair - but definitely also to check the guy (esp. if you are a female who brought the car in).

Aggie, see about getting a second opinion before you go looking for a new car, especially if you like your current one. With the economy being as such, it's not unlikely that mechanics are looking for work to do on cars. If the car wasn't doing anything, do not have him seal the hole, especially if the other mechanic says it makes it harder to fix, unless it's already done?

You mentioned Saab. I have one and I love it! The only problems I have had with it has been the stereo system. Twice. Other than that, it has been a highly reliable car, drives beautifully, and is one of the safest vehicles. You can hit a moose with it. It also has a S button and the turbo kicks in and it feels like you're in an airplane. Saab also used to build airplanes, so they have that aerodynamic feel. :D
I also have to be comfortable driving a car and I am in my Saab. I like the layout of the vehicle. and it also has a timeless quality to the design. I get great mileage - 30 mpg on highway.

i know i could spare y'all but i'm just unsure what route to take here. i looked at the honda pilot and the volvo xc90. a car isn't going to be suitable for us, because we have 2 dogs and one is a monster.

That's why I refrained from telling you how much I like my Miata. You need to get a second opinion and I bet there are plenty of good mechanics who aren't LR certified who would do a good job. Does it matter if they're certified? Isn't that more of a warranty issue? Make sure you know exactly waht's leaking and where it's leaking from. Oil sometimes leaks from valve covers and timing chain covers and it's not always that big a deal. Also being 700 mi over your oil change interval is not something to worry about.

Ask AugustInTransit about her Honda Fit. I'm totally nuts about that car. It's incredibly roomy, which is good for toting the doggies around.

Every Saab owner I've ever known swears by them! There used to be this sweet elderly lady around the corner with like a 1950 model! They were so danged cute together! Reliable? Yep!

he said he's just going to seal it:dunno: and so i called my mechanic in chattanooga and he said that, that's not a good idea, because that's hard to fix.

DING DING DING!

Alarm! You can't "just seal" a head gasket. You have to pull the heads off of the engine and replace the gaskets.

It may be something as simple as a bad thermostat...a 5 dollar part. The things this guy has told you don't add up. My 66 Mustang will start spewing water within minutes if I get it into stop and go traffic. Some cars just do.

He may be right, but this is all too suspect to me...

Why? SC is indicating that the mechanic may be exagerrating your problem and that lots of functional cars have minor issues like little leaks here and there and cooling problems. That's good news. I read somewhere that if your Land Rover isn't leaking oil, then it's out of oil! It MAY not be a big deal. My cherokee that I used to have would sometimes stain the driveway with a slow oil drip. Eventually I guess dirt or something plugged the leak and it was still going strong at 150K.
