I like these as well:

It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great Nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.- Patrick Henry

“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
- George Washington

Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is their duty – as well as privilege and interest – of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.
- John Jay

The Christian religion is the best religion that has ever been given to man
- Thomas Jefferson

“The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country.”
- Calvin Coolidge

You are 2/5. Only the Jay and Coolidge quotations are correct.

If Governor Perry sponsors, promotes, and sends invites to the other 49 governors (only one of which accepted) for this rally; I can only believe that he is using the state office of governor to advance his personal religious beliefs. Of course he has the right to proselytize or whatever he wants as a private citizen but not by using public office to do so.

Although there is nothing wrong with the rally, there is something wrong with it being sponsored and promoted by a state governor. Maintaining the seperation of church and state is the issue with which I have a problem.

Re the article Gidget offered (post #98): Even the Houston clergy appreciate the purpose of secularism in governing, which seems to have escaped Perry.

edit: When I say "nothing wrong with the rally", let me clarify that I mean a right to rally and be as exclusive as they wish - not in any way that I personally agree with what they're about. Perry should have let them have a rally and just attended it ............ truth be told, he's probably politicking even more than he is proselytizing.

Idlewild I admire you for defending your beliefs regarding the freedom to practice religion. I do not believe anyone in this forum whats to stamp out religion (like we did the native American culture). Can we not agree that the purpose of prayer is to strengthen a person's relationship with the supernatural (God or Creator). Why do politicians need to hold an exclusive prayer service to strengthen that relationship? No one is saying he can not pray every hour on the hour or whatever his conscience directs him to do but why the exclusive public prayer? IMO he has another purpose-votes. This is just an opinion. There is no reason to fear this opinion. I learned a long time ago that there are contradictions everywhere and for just about everything. Most days I think I believe in God. Other days I am not sure. Do you want to judge me for not being "christian". Would I be allowed to attend this prayer service? I know this, if I were a politician I would want you to think I believe in God every day because that is where the votes are :)

Hmm. It would appear there is room for error even in the Houston clergy. The seperation of church and state does not apply to individuals which are neither a church or a state, and, as individuals are entitled to the freedom to express themselves in any manner they wish according to our Constitution.

Rita you proved your bias in the 1st post- "deliver us from these people" or something simular. In your view the man gave up his rights to do anything the left does not approve of when he became governor. Democrats can speak in every black chruch in America and not one word from the defenders of speration of church and state. But a conservative cannot speak at a private function in a football stadium.
As far as whether you can pray to allah or buddah or whomever you wish should you attend, remember what you tell Christians about prayer in schools, no one can stop you from a silent prayer in your mind. What is exclusive is who speaks from the podium. And whoever pays for the podium has a right to say who stands behind it with a live mike.

Depending on the poll, only 60-75% percent of Americans identify themselves as Christian.

And only 60-75% of them ever actually go to church.

Mind sharing where you got your info from?

Research and fact checking, you should try it. Remember the internet is like the bible, just because you read it there doesn't make it true.
