Today I went to a restaurant in the Market Shops ( that I will leave nameless ) that primarily offers a variety of biscuits, lol! I paid with a credit card and normally there is a screen that will pop up asking for a percentage of tip to leave the server...
I asked the person that took my order just in case I had missed something and her reply was that they are NOT ALLOWED TO ACCEPT TIPS. I replied, “how un-American”?
and that TIPS stands for “to improve proper service”.
I’m just curious if this is acceptable to anybody that has worked in hospitality or people that understand that servers (depending on which restaurant they work in) don’t often make a decent living throughout the year and depend primarily on our seasonal tourism.
In my humble opinion... I feel that if someone goes out to enjoy a meal, that tipping is customary depending on the service. Even if the employer is paying their staff $15 per hour (I’m betting they don’t), that’s definitely not enough to live in this town.
That’s my rant. I simply feel it’s un-American.

Yea it’s frustrating sometimes. Back when I was using Walmart’s pickup I would try to tip the person loading the groceries. It was refused because it wasn’t allowed.

Fast food joints don't allow tipping. Kind of sad since employees are basically slaves of our mighty capitalist system.

I know the restaurant you were in probably seems different than your typical fast food chain. But when it comes to tipping, apparently not. I've not been in one but they don't have table service do they?

I remember the days when expecting tips without table service was "un-American".

If they say they don't accept tips, I don't argue and get on my way.

First, they have the option of leaving and going to a job that allows tipping, but I'll bet it doesn't offer as good a base wage.

Second, who cares? Most places spin the tablet around and your choices are 20/25/30+ percent.

True, I just felt sorry for the staff. JOB stands for Just Over Broke... they can always find another

I definitely didn’t argue and did the same. I simply find it un-American for a company to not allow people the chance of earning a better living and the possibility of having a smile on their face when they see how much they’ve earned as a result of the kindness and hard work they’ve put in at the end of their day.
