Bill Clinton coming Monday to Destin
July 30, 2007
By Florida Freedom Newspapers

For most of Monday, Harbor Docks restaurant owner Charles Morgan was giving odds of 70-30 that former President Bill Clinton would visit his establishment.
By that evening, the odds had gotten much better, as Clinton's advance team nailed down plans for an exclusive fund-raising event on heavily Republican turf in Northwest Florida.
"Somebody asked 'How did he know how to find y'all?' " Morgan said. "I said, 'Hey, if you're looking to find Democrats in this area, it's not too hard.' "
Only those who produce a check of $2,300 or more will be allowed inside Harbor Docks for the Hillary Clinton fund-raiser, said Toni Craig, who chairs Okaloosa County's Democratic Party. It is scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday.
"I asked, 'Well, what about us poor Democrats?' " Craig said. "At the very least, I'll have my Clinton supporters out at the street."
Clinton's wife, U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., leads among Democratic presidential hopefuls in Florida, according to poll results released Friday by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research.
She won't be at Monday's event.
She had support from 31 percent of the state's Democrats, compared to 17 percent for her closest rival, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
Florida's presidential primary is Jan. 29.
The former president last visited the area in the late 1990s for an Eglin Air Force Base memorial service honoring victims of the Khobar Towers terrorist bombing.
Morgan said Clinton's plan to visit has generated a lot of excitement in the area.
"The response has been very impressive," he said.
Secret Service agents were scheduled to arrive Thursday to begin preparations, Morgan said.
The restaurant owner did not know exactly what the protocol for such events was, and it was unclear whether media would be allowed to attend the event.
"I asked them how long he planned to speak, and they told me, 'He'll go as long as you've got a microphone in front of him,' " Morgan said. "I'm gonna trick him into playing the saxophone."
Morgan has traditionally been successful at luring big-name Democrats to Harbor Docks.
Bill McBride came to the restaurant in 2002, shortly before emerging victorious in a hard-fought Democratic primary and eventually losing to Jeb Bush in the governor's race.
Presidential hopeful and later vice presidential candidate John Edwards packed the restaurant during a 2003 campaign visit.

I have a feeling that their decisions have more to do with politrics than thinking that the war is bad.

Yes, but maybe in this instance, their "politrickal" thinking was good, despite the motive.

Maybe, but lately I've been wondering. What if they are just covering up vital information and would putting us a great risk by their political actions? I don't know, but it sure has me thinking a bit. :idontno: Seriously, go back and read my post which includes Bill Clinton's speech from Dec 1998 regarding Desert Fox. Bill Clinton sent out attacks on Iraq, and he was persistent about our need to take out Iraq. That is the part which really has me wondering.

As I recall, both sides of the aisle had the same bad info regarding Iraq. Once we got there and it became evident that the decision to invade was a colossal eff-up, why would anybody but suckups and eternal optimists want to continue their support for a war that had gone so badly? At least there are some people trying to put some bandaids on damage that will never be fully repaired.

Despite what most want to believe here, the surge is working. Even the NYT says so. John Burns is doing some great journalism work over there.

Hillary played dumb to the Monica story because she didn't want to blow her shot at the Presidency. Bill may have not done more than a lot of husbands do, but that doesn't make it right. In fact, it sets the bad example for the population. His actions show that it is okay to break your vows which were made before God and the State. Furthermore, he went a step to far, IMO, lying about it while under oath. He could have said, "My sex life is none of your d_mn business," but no, he lied about, while looking all loving and caring. Now he wasn't the first to sleep around while in office, but I think he was the first to blatantly lie about it to the public in a press release. Not the role model I want for my kids. I want a President (wishful thinking) who will set a good example as a person and a leader. I do hold elected officials to higher standards. They put themselves on a pedestal for everyone to see, so it seems rather ridiculous that they don't think they are being watched by everyone.

As for judging, do you think we should close our eyes and pull the lever when we are selecting a leader for our country? To me, that doesn't make sense. Elected politicians need to be judged every day in order to keep them somewhat honest. I think you are pushing the envelope on that statement about not judging. ;-)

Amen to that Bro!

YES, it was wrong for him to lie, and 2 wrongs do not make right. But what about redeemtion?

Husbands and wives make vows before God.

As parents, how we behave is our children's role model.

As for closing our eyes and pulling a lever to elect a leader, IMO ....and I have one just like everyone else... the record shows that is exactly what happened when George Bush was elected.

I too want a honest elected officials.

I am not judging anyone, I simply quoted what the bible says. Not pushing any envelope.

Anyway, my point in posting this was to share the information. :lolabove:

Redemption works if someone actually redeems themself, it's not an automatic process. As far as the Bible quote, it says "Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?" The phrase "Judge not" has been taken out of context. The office of President is a serious position, only one is elected out of millions. For someone to disgrace the office, disgraces the entire country. Do you really believe that "Bill" is as good as this country can produce? The president sets the standard for all Americans, and represents us to the world. Is there no one that obtain a higher standard of ethics than that?

NEVER TEAR DOWN ANYTHING UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO BUILD SOMETHING BETTER IN ITS PLACE.

This rule applies to both individuals and things. It?s easy to criticize other people thoughtlessly for their shortcomings, and equally easy to find fault in their work or in situations that are not to your liking. It is far more difficult to be a builder of people and to create works of art, useful products, or profitable businesses. Make sure you are a builder, not a destroyer of people and things. When you criticize the actions or work of others-your children, your employees, or others for whom you are responsible-make sure your criticisms are positive and directed at the act, or the opportunity for improvement, not the individual.

hoonoone200, I don't think many people have been bragging about GW's accomplishments. Where did you get that idea? Bush is too deep in the war to gain popularity from the LEFT, and he is too far left, except for the war, to gain popularity from the GOP. If anyone likes GW, it is most likely due to their idea that he was the better of the very limited two choices.

Arkiehawg, "your" is the possessive form of "you". I think you were looking for "you're" which is the contracted word for "you are". In Florida schools, even the remedial students learn that before they turn seven. Hope this helps.

I absolutely welcome Bill Clinton to Destin!
I've been waiting a long time to find a use for this smilie, who appears to be pounding his fist on the invisible table..., but with Bill being the topic, I wonder if this one is more appropriate?

BTW, I have no problem with Billy coming to Destin, but please keep him on the west side of the outlet mall, I mean "Factory Stores."

You don?t need to thank me. You are brightening my day by providing quality entertainment as you insult other poster's intelligence and the President's public speaking with a comment that shows your failure to grasp elementary concepts of the English language.

Well the fun is still in this forum I see.... (at least for me)

I cannot afford to pay $2,300 to hear Bill Clinton stump for Hillary! I do however find him to be engaging, eloquent and extremely intelligent so if anyone on this Board goes, please provide a report.

I will give him credit that he's probably the greatest politician I'll ever see in my lifetime. Too bad he didn't accomplish anything with that kind of talent.

Even as I type this I am already regretting this - please do not all jump down my throat as I know I will pretty much be the lone voice out here in the south heartland.......BUT

I really, truely, deeply do not care ONE iota about what Bill Clinton did with his personal life while in office. He was IMHO an unbelievably skilled politician who oversaw one of the greatest economic expansions in the US (no need to talk about whether that was luck or public policy, or private enterprise -that is not the point here) who unfortunately squandered a lot of his potential on sex and power and dragged this country into an embarrassing public spectacle. I know an insane amount of time, money and resources was spent on impeachment proceedings and by now we all know about the abject hypocrisy of so many who were calling for his head!

Notwithstanding the very good points SJ raised earlier about politicians ideally valuing and respecting the highest form of public office (and I agree with this) - Bill Clinton was acting in the same way that thousands and thousands of us all act (making point here that more than 65% of Americans supposedly admit to cheating on their spouses) - and I personally do not need to hold a man or woman to higher PERSONAL standards just because they are seeking the presidency - at this point I just crave someone competent.

+1 Chickpea

While he did drag the country into an embarrassing public spectacle, it PALES in comparison to what "King George" has done to embarrass our country in the eyes of the vast majority of the world.....
