And you asked me when I fell off the turnip truck, once in another thread?
But, I digress. The other countries economies are deteriorating because they bought toxic mortgages as well, hence less demand as more people are forced to cut back. heating costs will be higher this season because of advance purchases. Many people will be forced to choose between heat and food. The oil companies may not be able to extend credit. People are still trying to pay off their heating bills from last year. So, are you suggesting we do nothing to expand on alternative energies so other countries economies can prosper? continue like business as usual? As you sit on your computer and use all the technologies available to you now not available 10 years ago, do you not gain any foresight as to what advances can be made scientifically in alternative energies?

What "alternative energy" technologies do you propose to sell to these other countries? Remember that in the real world, in order for you to actually sell the technology to other people, it has to be cheaper than the technology that currently exist which has fallen in price by 40% in the last 8 months. BTW, the poor people trying to pay last year's heating bills would be much worse off with the technologies currently in vogue with Al Gore. Wind and solar are the two most expensive alternative options out there. You ought to at least be honest about that. It seems rather silly to talk about all the good employment jobs that will be created by government investment in alternative technologies that are not economically viable (and don't look to be in the foreseeable future). It sounds about par for the course for government.

Wow I guess I'm in the sowal minority as I thought that Obama absolutely embarrassed McCain. I do think McCain did better on foreign policy questions than economic ones, and give him props for actually intoducing an idea, but generally he was awful. He is done.

I imagine Obama wishes he had taken those town hall debates afterall.

Obama seemed very poised, perhaps a bit frustrated in that the format did not allow responses after the opposition answered. There were a few times when McCain threw out some misinformation about Obama that Obama seemed eager to correct. The biggest thing I noticed was how much better of a speaker Obama is than McCain. McCain appeared comfortable in the town hall style of debate (hardly a debate!) but his communication skills seem simply awkward. He speaks more like a salesman than a leader. Some of Palin's nonsensical word order seems to have rubbed off on McCain too. Nonetheless, McCain really needed to make a strong showing tonight and it just didn't happen.

I say let's have a REAL debate style DEBATE where the two candidates can call each other out on whatever needs to be addressed. One "town hall" style debate is enough. Let's hear some real issues and get the heat going. Time to take the gloves off.

I had been feling guilty because I turned it off and went to bed after an hour. I felt frustrated because it was so much a political sparing match and so little content addressing furture options.

I thought they were both dreadful tonight. Obama seemed unenergetic, but made no missteps. McCain's new mortgage plan had me trembling with both fear and anger. I have already absentee voted for McCain, but I would have seriously considered changing to Bob Barr after hearing this plan.

I think McCain is running one of the worst campaigns in Presidential history and this race may be over...

dreadful campaign is so right. it is definitely dreadful, and the way one runs a campaign is very telling about his/her ability to run a country, imo.

I agree Fishfood. Obama was very calm and dignified (though not exactly exciting). McCain struck me as a hothead who has no manners. The more I see him in action the less I like him. The disdain he has for Obama is getting harder for him to hide. and it reflects badly on himself.

Here is what I think of Obama - he has to stay calm and look dignified to keep up his lead in the polls. He cannot afford to do anything that could potentially be risky at this point in the game. He is holding back big time. I would love to see him come out and just say what he thinks and feels. But, he is sticking to his message and staying consistent and trying not to pitch any new ideas at this point. I think he needs to show more energy and give more insight into his ideas, though it could be risky.

where is HIllary? seriously, I miss her professionalism and wish so much she was part of all this. I think this country needs her. In fact, I am wishing she was the Presidential candidate with Obama as VP. That would be ideal in my world. that way we would have a very good chance at a very long and productive presence in the white house.

mccain's "tic" being "my friends" comes across so false. it has the smell of desperation because he repeats it sooooooooooooooooooooooo many times. i'll take obama "ahhhhhhnd" any day. at least that's not an attempt at pandering. i also thought mccain's "that one" comment was highly inappropriate and very unpresidential-like.

On The Today Show this morning Joe Biden defended McCain's behavior in last night's debate. He said that when McCain is argung a point, he doesn't look at his opponent or refer to him/her by name (so he defended McCain on the "that one" issue). Biden said that is just McCain's style and that he has no problem with it.

I agree. The constant use of "my friends" in a room full of strangers diminishes the concept of friendship.

In fact, McCain's body language and tone last night diminished almost every thing he said. :sosad:

Why, he even attacked his buddy, Tom Brokaw...what was that all about? and then hurried away without bothering to interact with his "friends":dunno:

I have a question...it might be stupid....but....
When McCain talks about a 5,000 dollar tax refund that people can use to obtain health care...does he mean that it will be designated solely for health care? Does he relally believe that if every citizen is given 5,000 $ that they are going to use it on health care??????
At least Obama wants to CHANGE health care, not hand people $$$ to blow on other things.
Am I reading this wrong?

I got very bored with the debate...it was tedious and frustrating. Each candidate was trying to dig at the other and Obama was so busy trying to combat McCain's barbs that the real answers were not forth coming!
I found the whole thing distasteful and sickening.

I really thought it was a fine debate of the current issues, and I always just feel grateful that we have two highly articulate candidates (compared to the Dub who could barely talk). They both performed well IMO. But, I think we're bored with the canned talk. We want real talk, real debate. somebody say something original, pleeeeeeeese..
