For some reason (maybe withdrawal symptoms from college football?) we decided to try to see every movie nominated for Best Picture. We got DVDs of most of them. Here they are:

"The Artist" Thomas Langmann, Producer -- have it, haven't seen it yet
"The Descendants" Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, Producers -- have it, we both cried
"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" Scott Rudin, Producer -- we haven't gotten that yet
"The Help" Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, Producers -- watched it last night -- loved it -- we cried
"Hugo" Graham King and Martin Scorsese, Producers -- we haven't gotten that yet
"Midnight in Paris" Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, Producers -- ditto
"Moneyball" Michael De Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Brad Pitt, Producers -- really enjoyable, but it won't win
"The Tree of Life" Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad, Dede Gardner and Grant Hill, Producers
"War Horse" Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, Producers -- have it, haven't seen it yet

We also got "My Week with Marilyn" but haven't seen it yet.

I'm really surprised that "The Bridesmaids" got nominated for anything. In my opinion it was just middle-school potty humor, just gross.

From the movies we've seen so far, I think "The Descendents" should get best picture. But we've got several more to watch. ;)

Any of you movie buffs out there have any opinions on any of the nominees for best picture, best actor, best actress, etc.?

We saw "Extremely Loud" and I thought it was good, but not excellent. The one I really want to see is "Hugo". Has anybody got an opinion on it?

What a great idea BR!!! Although, I often seek the winners out...after the awards. And I must say, am often disappointed. Saw War Horse on the big screen.....I was on pins and needles the whole time! Great movie...I watched Bridesmaids the other night...wish someone had told me it stunk! It was awful! However, I thought Melissa McCarthy was funny....The Help is epic.

Hugo is excellent - film making at it's finest. The story behind the story is one that all movie lovers will appreciate. The acting and production is 1st rate. Scorsese at his best putting a little bit more into it because of who he is. See it on the big screen!

We'll get that after we watch the DVDs we have. Thanks for the rec! Tonight I want to watch Marilyn.

EDIT: We've been watching "The Artist" for about 15 minutes. I think I'm gonna claw my eyeballs out. Maybe we're not sophisticated enough to appreciate this movie.

Thanks for the list of nominated movies BR. I've not taken the time to read about these yet. Surprisingly, I have seen 3 of these:
The Help - my favorite movie in a long while
Hugo - beautiful/wonderful
Moneyball - good story, enjoyed the movie (rental material, imo)

hey.... no Hangover 2 on the list? :D I liked it, in a weird kind of way.

Haven't seen Hangover 2 or Hugo. I'll put that those on hubby's list to buy.

I downloaded the first few chapters of The Help on my Kindle. Made me feel uncomfortable. But when I saw the movie, I realized that beyond the first few chapters of the book, the movie makes strong statements against the discrimination that was not on the radar back when I was growing up. The Help is strong, as are the actresses Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Emma Stone.
