Since I work in community mental health, not in private practice, most people have medical cards, or are provided with samples or put on drug programs where the drug companies supply the medications.
Those who do not have medical cards nor insurance pay the office visit based on income. We charge those people 2, 10, 15 or 20 dollars. CHEAP if you ask me. We charge separately for therapy and for medication management. So, if you see a therapist and doctor on the same day and your co-pay is 10 dollars....you leave with 20 dollars less.
To answer the question, I see adult clients only, though we have therapists here who see the children. The adults I have diagnosed did not undergo any major tests, nothing that cost any money, and I can legally diagnose ADHD. I have two questionnaires I ask them to fill out and I take a LONG good history and go from there!
Personally, I recommend people to see a therapist and psychiatrist for symptoms of ADHD or ANY mental disorders, rather than a family doctor, because we SPECIALIZE in this area, therefore are more trained and experienced than a practitioner who doesn't specialize.
I mean, if you need surgery, you see a surgeon, who is also a doctor but TRAINED/SPECIALIZES in a more specified field.
