Since I work in community mental health, not in private practice, most people have medical cards, or are provided with samples or put on drug programs where the drug companies supply the medications.

Those who do not have medical cards nor insurance pay the office visit based on income. We charge those people 2, 10, 15 or 20 dollars. CHEAP if you ask me. We charge separately for therapy and for medication management. So, if you see a therapist and doctor on the same day and your co-pay is 10 dollars....you leave with 20 dollars less.

To answer the question, I see adult clients only, though we have therapists here who see the children. The adults I have diagnosed did not undergo any major tests, nothing that cost any money, and I can legally diagnose ADHD. I have two questionnaires I ask them to fill out and I take a LONG good history and go from there!

Personally, I recommend people to see a therapist and psychiatrist for symptoms of ADHD or ANY mental disorders, rather than a family doctor, because we SPECIALIZE in this area, therefore are more trained and experienced than a practitioner who doesn't specialize.

I mean, if you need surgery, you see a surgeon, who is also a doctor but TRAINED/SPECIALIZES in a more specified field.

Ah yes...ADD. I was diagnosed about three years ago, quite by accident. I took my then 15 year old daughter in for 'symtoms of depression'. Had made the appointment in April or May but got in June or July, by this time she tells the Doc she feels fine - schools out, no pressure, no depression. He turned his head to the side and (right hand raised) a light bulb sprung up over his noggin. He explained, it was probably never depression in the first place, but a symptom of ADD. He asked her several questions and wanted her to fill out a questionaire. As he explained in more detail why he suspected ADD, my head turns to the side and (right hand raised) a light bulb sprung up over my noggin. (Mirror in the room. For those who wondered how I would know.) I took the test as well and I have to tell you that was one of the best scores I've ever had! Be warned, once you start taking your meds, you'll be darn near PERFECT!!!!! (Ridalin, does not effect humility.) :D
