I caught a news story on "Idol" last night- about it being such a mean show-and I agree that it has become such a cruel circus. What is the point in having such obviously untalented people be on the show, other than to point fingers and laugh at them? I guess you could argue that it is their 3 seconds of fame, but I still don't see the point when I am sure there were plenty of people with real talent that could have been in their place, and actually competing, instead of being the butt of the judges' jokes. I think the worst part is being made fun of by people like those judges!

I have never been an Idol fan for this reason- it is just too ugly at the beginning of every season.

Sorry for my rant- back to regularly scheduled Idol programming.

Good points Jenay. I also think the producers want these untalented types on air for the ratings. I do enjoy the show itself but have trouble tolerating the try outs.

The other thing that bothers me, is where are the parents of these people? I have always been an encouraging mom. However I wouldn't give false hope to an obviously untalented child. Who would encourage their child into thinking they could be famous just to be belittled and crushed like this?

It's like Mermaid said of the family she knows, if you don't have an interesting "story" then you're not chosen to audition. I enjoy watching the true talent and even some of the people that are horrible are interesting, but the "special needs" adults, I can't accept that as entertainment. It's gone too far. It makes a mockery of those with true talent.

Exactly. I bet there are lots of people out there with incredible talent that auditioned and were passed over for the ones that will make everyone laugh. I don't want an "intersting" life story- I want to hear some people that can really sing and have worked hard for a break.

An overhaul of this show is needed- real and credible judges (with real talent and class themselves) and talented and deserving singers. The nasty-meant-to-be-funny putdowns of the "targets" needs to stop.

I watched the first half hour and was so put off that I started to iron shirts and pants and didn't think I missed anything. I didn't even bother watching the second show.

I'd also like to see some kids who have worked hard for a break. I'm a little bored with these talentless brats who go into hysterics when they're not chosen. What's with this sense of entitlement? I don't understand why the screetchers think that just because they show up, they should automatically be kow-towed to and sent to Hollywood. It's like they're saying "You owe me." Sorry, no, we don't.

So, do you think this is backfiring or causing more people to watch? How many more audition shows are there? I will wait to watch again when the real show starts.

Well I have watched it all up to this point. However, the auditions really make me nuts. My opinion is this. Remember William Hung? He was awful, but he went on to make $$$ based on his audition. I think these folks are trying to do the same thing. IMHO.

Now, I know Memphis is next week. B'ham is in there somewhere but not sure when. I will have to do some checking up on it.

I don't know about the ratings, but I am sure they are high.

Bdarg hates karaoke. Refuses to go, always has. He says that it makes him feel uncomfortable- people going onstage and getting laughed at and jeered. Now I know what he means- that uncomfortable feeling does not make for fun TV for me. I won't even watch when the real show starts since there has yet to be anyone that I can listen to without rolling my eyes or cringing!

(OK- going to my bunker now to shield myself from the arrows- I am sure my blasphemous Idol views are not popular!!)

No arrows from me...even though I'm a fan. You, cheering, jr,mermy and miss kitty are all right. They do seem to take it to a new level of nastiness each year. But, I think all those early contestants know exactly what they're getting into when they sign up...just a thought. And yes, you are absolutely right in that it's all for ratings..just a thought. :D

You don't need to hide, silly, everyone is thinking the same. We're ALL waiting for the real singing to begin.

What would the world be like if all liked/disliked the same things jdarg. It would be pretty boring to me. So, no arrows from me girlfriend. I certainly understand your feelings!!!!
