Thoughts on American Idol tonight from Memphis. Not as bad as auditions in Seattle or Minnesota, but still lacking. But of course, out of the 22 that made it, we did not get to see them all, which sucked. The guy from Bryant, Arkansas with the long hair surprised me. I thought the first guy that sang from Arkansas had a good voice, but they said he was over the top. I didn't feel he sang any more over the top than the guy from Texas though. The blond headed girl from Memphis was good, thought the black girl from Memphis with the short red hair was not bad, but they didn't feel she was good enough to compete in this competition. And the guy from Texas with the goatee whose father was a singer and dancer with a song called Treat Me Right I believe, he was good. The woman from Brentwood, TN who is a backup singer was fantastic. Really good.

I liked the Texas guy, the blonde and the back up singer. I thought the judges were less vicious tonight--or maybe it was edited???:dunno:
New York should be interesting.

Yeah, I am wondering about New York. This town just couldn't have auditions without someone doing Elvis. I like Elvis but all the clips of people doing Burning Love I could do without. I do think they were less vicious tonight. Maybe some of it was edited.

I really think they've intentionally toned the meaness down. Some of the..er, "contestants" still were just plain insane, but I thought all and all, tonight, the judges were kinder. Even Simon. There were a couple of really good singers and they let through a couple that I didn't think would make it. So...maybe a "kinder, gentler AI"??

. But, I think all those early contestants know exactly what they're getting into when they sign up...just a thought. And yes, you are absolutely right in that it's all for ratings..just a thought. :D

I just spoke with a co-worker whose daughter tried out in Memphis this year. The daughter had to sign a paper stating it was okay for the show to make fun of her. Since she was underage, the mom had to sign as well. She said her daughter was okay with that policy.

Hmm. So I guess she didn't make it to Hollywood? Did they show her on tv?

Is it live in Birmingham? It looked like they were showing clips from there.:dunno: Maybe from last year? This is my first time watching. I know it seems heartless at times, but there are some great singers as well. I think that one of the comments made last night about "It wasn't about pretty good singers making it but they are only looking for THE American Idol" kind of summed it up. I did really really feel bad for the African American woman who was kind of plump and short. I thought she was great. I hope she doesn't give up!

I know a couple of people I wish would go to Birmingham if it is live next week!
