As JohnR said, this is not a political event, but an informational one about taking care of where we live. Just chill out, shut up, go to the event, and maybe learn something new.

I agree with some of the above statements regarding listening to both sides of the issue. If nothing else, come for the discussion of energy sources. One thing that seems to be believed by both sides of the global warming issue, is that we have a growing hole in our Ozone layer, the layer which protects us against harmful radiation of the stars, including our Sun.

I had a philosophy teacher who responded with the following answer when asked whether he believed in God. In his philosophical way of answering, he stated the following. If God exists, and you believe in God, you will be okay. If God doesn't exists and you believe in God, you have no loss and no gain. If God exists and you don't believe in God, you are screwed.

I believe we can apply the same thought process to our growing hole in the Ozone Layer. I don't pretend to be a scientists and I certainly don't have enough information to be able to know what is happening with our world. However, I do know that we, myself included, are a wasteful society who do not listen to what Nature is telling us. We seem to do things because of the money behind the issue. There are plenty of natural resources which we can use to provide energy with little effect on our environment, yet we choose to go with the ones which provide money to politicians and their "friends." If we as a society can change our sources, without having much impact on our daily routine, we could improve our planet. I could give a rat's @ss about Al Gore. He is a politician, and you probably know my distaste for poli-trick-tions. However, we can be open to all sides and hopefully come away with some practical information to take back to our daily habits. Believe the reported facts or not, but try to learn and grow and be more aware of the effects which our habits place on this world in which we are nothing more than a spec of dust.

Jdarg, it's precisely that attitude I hate. I listen, read and formulate my views from a multitude of sources. I can't be there for the movie Sorry, but will at some time see it. I am socially and envirormentally sensitive person. I pick up more crap than is imaginable off the beaches. I am in favor of discussing important issues such as global warming, the ozone, clean air and water. However everyone needs to look inside themselves too see what each of us can do to better the world. Has no one heard that the space shuttle punches more holes in the ozone than man could ever hope too? Or that the Ozone was only in the news(mid 90's) cause Dupont's patent on Freon ran out and they had the patent on it's replacement. Is it not possible that global warming and cooling are a natural earthly process. Sure we're doing things all the time that are irresponsible that need to be corrected. Yet I'm not Naive enough to believe much of what Mr. Moore or Gore have to say about anything. Those 2 travel around by private jets. Mr. Gore has SUVs with sercet service at all times with him. Think he'll give that up? Maybe he shouldn't have printed his book, sure took a lot of trees to put it in print. He should have published it on his invention the Internet!
As far as shutting up.. a BIG F that to You, that's for College where free thought seems discouraged these days.
Shutting up is what discourages free flow of ideas which I will refuse to do. Maybe Al Gore should explain where all the batteries from hybrid cars are going to be landfilled. Maybe explain why during his time in office we weren't moving toward Ethanol based fuels which are cleaner. Is Brasil that much smarter than we are? Their cars( all of them) won't use gas but sugar ethanol in less than 5 years.
Go ahead shut up be sucked by the Gore/Moore propaganda film. I won't be suckered. I'll see it. But be skeptical at best. I think I know what their agenga is... to sell books and movie tickets.
JohnR, thanks I will have a good trip. Aspen for 3 weeks is always good. Sometimes work sucks but never on my snowboard in Aspen will it. And if all that snow they just got in Colorado is Global Warming then bring it on, Pow Pow turns galore for this kid. Peace

Whew, guess BS gave me my a$$whupping for the day. My comment was meant to re-focus on what John R said in the announcement for the event- that

"This will not be a political event, but rather an opportunity for the community to come together to discuss the state of the environment both globally and locally."

This event has not even happened and already there is a negative tone. I can decide whether to be wary of the messenger or not, thank you very much. And BTW- I can't stand Michael Moore. People who use a big loud mouth and are aggressive in their positions, left or right, conservative or liberal, bug me and make me not want to "jump on board", even if i agree with their cause or opinion. Sometimes a soft sell works better.;-)

Will be being shown at Gulfplace on Jan. 11 at 6:30. Press release below.

Please join us 6:30 pm, Thursday, January 11th, 2007 on the lawn at Gulf Place for a community gathering to discuss environmental issues in Walton County. Bring your own seating and blankets as the event will be outside. Gulf Place lawn is located on the corner of Scenic Hwy 30-A and S. County Road 393 behind frontage buildings.

Contact: Jenifer Kuntz 303-819-6725
Arix Zalace 850-855-9641

D&A Maintenance has teamed up with event producer Jenifer Kuntz to facilitate a community discussion regarding environmental issues in Walton County. We will be showing An Inconvenient Truth, a slide presentation documenting global warming, followed by a roundtable discussion about Walton Counties? responsibilities as stewards of the environment. The discussion will address two points, our power and our waste.

Following the film, representatives from Alabama Electric Company and Waste Management will each give a 10-15 minute presentation about Walton Counties? current power, and waste/recycling programs. After which the audience will take part in a Q&A discussion with the representatives. We will be investigating/understanding where our power comes from, what constitutes green energy and is it in our future. And, where does our garbage go, what sort of recycling does Walton County have, and can we implement a more comprehensive recycling program.

This will not be a political event, but rather an opportunity for the community to come together to discuss the state of the environment both globally and locally.

Additional sponsors and guests will have informational booths. Guests include Sundog Books offering topic related literature, For the Health of it serving natural snacks and beverages, Tiahrt Lopez Construction sharing green building practices, D&A Maintenance educating guests on home efficiency, as well as several others.

Kudos to those taking the time to organize a showing and discussion of this film for the community. :clap_1:

I was told to come to this site and read the discussion that has been going on. I am one of the people who put this event together. After reading I felt inclined to reply specifically to BeachSteeler. I am sorry for your anger. After reading your messages it is very clear to me that you are very angry about something, though I really doubt it is the event that we have put together. I would encourage you to stop, take a breath, and watch the film before you continue to write about it. The reality of the situation is that the economy is going green. Some of the biggest corporations are spending a great deal of time and money to move in this direction, of their own free will. Wal Mart is a perfect example, and I personally doubt they are moving in this direction because they care about the environment. I believe they are doing so because they are able to see what is coming and want to profit from it as much as possible. The southeast is one of the last places in the country to really embrace the reality of our situation. You are obviously very intelligent and well read. I agree with some of your points and could argue others as skillfully as you have presented them, but that would be pointless. What isn't pointless is the fact that both you and I want to be comfortable in this world we live in. In order to do this we all have to change. I am just as guilty as the next person about being a "wasteful" American. I could sit here and argue that I am less wasteful than others, but the point remains "I am wasteful. "Green" is beneficial to everyone whether you care about the environment or not. Learning to live green is learning to save a considerable amount of money by reducing your waste. Everyone wins. Those who could care less about the environment will have more money, and those who do care about the environment will have cleaner healthier communities. Our event is not about politics. It is simply an opportunity to come together as a community and discuss a path to a better future. To everyone out there: Our society is going green whether we like it or not. It may seem slow at first, but one thing is for certain, you can either take part or be left behind. I wish everyone the best and hope to see you at the event, especially BeachSteeler (I admire your passion).
