That does sound far!! Ours wanted to "get out of the Midwest", but after visiting the campus, I can see why she likes MS State. They did such a wonderful job at Orientation too. A lot of her friends are going to U of Missouri, but it is a huge school, and not far enough away for her liking. She is going to major in Environmental Engineering and "save the world" she says! Their Engineering school is top-notch, another reason she's going there. Her classes are going to be tough, and she has to maintain a 3.0 to keep her scholarship and remain there. She's excited, and ready to work hard!

My niece went to Missouri and my other niece went to Miss. State, mine went to Ole Miss. I am sure your daughter will enjoy it, its a great campus town. Be sure to go eat at Oby's, the chicken salad is wonderful and so are the waffle fries.

Is she going thru Rush?

We already ate at Oby's--twice!! My daughter LOVES the waffle fries w/ the Rotel cheese sauce. I had a shrimp po'boy, and it was yummy too. We had dinner there when she met her roommate for the first time, and her parents. They met on MySpace, or Facebook, one of the 2. Roomie wants to be a reconstructive surgeon, so she has a lot of schooling ahead of her. She is from Phoenix, so they will both be far from home! No to Rush.

Actually her being from Phoenix, will be a good thing. That way your daughter will have someone that will be staying weekends unlike the many that live in MS and will go home.

Even though our daughter was only 90 miles from Memphis, she stayed unless they closed the dorm and made her go home. All of her friends were from out of state, therefore.

If you attend the Egg Bowl, Ole Miss vs. State, Thanksgiving weekend, let me know I will be there.

1. you cry when you drop them off

2. you cry again when the book bill comes

3. you cry again and again when they stop communicating with you, because they are too busy and are growing up

4. oh my, you cry a river 4, 5, 6  years later when they move back in

:D

I got my first dose of it this summer when my son went to a music festival in Mass. for 2 weeks. Totally on his own, no chaperone's, alone and away at a college. We asked him to call us when his flight landed - - no call. We asked him to keep in touch occasionally - - nope.

I finally texted him after the 1st week that if he didn't contact us in some form or another I was calling the director. He texted back that he was busy.

Boy oh boy, am I in for it. We will probably NEVER hear from him unless he needs $$ or is in trouble. My heart will be broken.

I can always count on you to make me laugh.

1. Yes, you cry when you drop them off BUT you never let them see it. Ever. If you do, you're being self-indulgent. They're excited. Don't ruin it for them. Save the histronics for the trip home.

2. Shocking, the book bills!!! And galling that you pay $100+ a pop and when it's time for resale you can only recoup half or less, even if your child has never cracked the book open!!! (Not that I'm naming names, mind you.)

3. I've learned that if you're stingy with the money, they'll always find a reason to talk to you. You can even torture them for at least fifteen minutes before you reach your hand in the wallet. Make 'em pay! make 'em pay! is what I say.

4. I got one in the basement who shows no sign of finishing up his degree and moving out. I stopped feeding him, I stopped giving him an allowance...and he still hasn't gotten the hint!!!

Missouri Mom, it's different at first, when the house is empty, but it affords many opportunities! Some of them are very obvious and very wonderful. ;-)

oh, and how I am looking forward to some of these many new opportunities myself. I have many projects I can't wait to try my hand at. And it will take converting his bedroom into some sort of a studio.
