I've been PUSHING PLAY, walking/running daily and shopping the perimeter of Publix. I love Clean Eating Magazine recipes and can get the kids to eat some of them. (The Thai Chili in the recent issue is not good though...too much tomato).
I'm a data junkie so I got the BodyMedia armband. It isn't a necessary item but I'm very interested in the information it gives me on steps taken, calories burned, when I hit "vigorous" activity. Back in the day, I was burning 4,000-5,000 calories just in the course of playing around. Now days with my sedentary job I'm lucky to burn 2500 in a day. It is really helping motivate me to get out there and get my workouts done

I had a body bugg a few years ago but it kicked the bucket, I'm thinking of getting a new one. I'm competitive with myself and I liked being able to track my calories burned, steps taken and such as well and would try to top myself.

Thanks for the ideas. Sometimes I get into a menu rut. Now if I could just get hubby to eat sweet potatoes ...

Try oven baked sweet potato fries!! Keep the peel on them, slice and bake - sometimes I use cumin, pepper and salt on them.

I don't even begin to use as much oil as this person does in the recipe I linked (has way too many calories in 1/4 cup my goodness!) I use just enough to spray the pan and then a light spraying of mist on the sweet potatoes to let the seasonings stick. (I don't use the bag thing - just cut them, put them on the sprayed sheets, lightly mist with olive oil, sprinkle on whatever seasonings you like and bake). I like my chewy and crisp as the same time. OH so good! Men usually love them! Luckily my dh loves every veggie and fruit out there - as well as whole grains. He better because that's what I cook lol. ;-)

i watched a cooking show one day where they cut their potato into fries and then boiled a bit, drained, dried and then sprayed with a touch of oil, seasoned and baked. they said it ensured they were cooked through on the inside but not overcooked on the outside-I'm going to try it this week.

I find it very easy to eat healthy in the winter months. Tonight we are having saut?ed dandelion greens with onion and balsamic vinegar and then I will roast cut up sweet potatoes, turnips, onions and bell pepper with rosemary in the oven.

I have a digital pressure cooker so this afternoon I made hummus from scratch and yesterday Cuban Black Beans. I love my veggie 'fajitas' - mushrooms, peppers, onions, zucchini, spinach served with freshly made guacamole and beans.

Cabbages and bok choy cooked with onions and peppers and mushrooms and tamari over brown rice. The list goes on and on......

I do still love a huge salad in the winter months - especially when I make my own dressing out of raw apple cider vinegar, tamari, flaxseed oil and herbs - sometimes I mash in a little avocado too.

Good thread!

PS Just had a mess of organic Florida strawberries. They are so sweet right now that I just ate them plain. YUM!!

Yum!!! Thanks for the ideas!!:D

the bodybugg with smart phone app was $245 I think, you can get just the bodybugg for like $175 and sync to your computer. They also have a watch piece that you can buy for like $80 to track thru the day if you don't have ready access to sync at work. I have the watch from my last bodybugg but may go ahead and pay the extra for the phone app, that's on my to do list today.

I make both types of potato "fries" and never take the extra step to boil them. Don't waste your time and all the effort.

My favorite way to really cook sweet potatoes and potatoes this time of year is to make what I call "Roasties"

I scrub both types of potatoes and leave the peels on them and cut them into cubes (I have a case of organic garnet yams that are PERFECTLY incredible!) I also cube a large or couple of smaller peeled turnips, dice up an onion (not too small) and bell pepper. I put those in a bowl and then step out the back door and get some (secret ingredient) rosemary. Be generous with the rosemary. I toss this around and put on two large cookie sheets that have been sprayed with olive oil. After they are on the pans I use my olive oil mister and mist and then sprinkle with salt and pepper. I cook them at 425 - until they are ROASTED. OMG so good and I usually always serve them with a 'greens' on the side - either broccoli, kale, collards, dandelions, spinach - whatever is looking good.

Have fun cooking - I so love to cook healthy meals!

I would love to get a bodymedia arm band or something like that. Are they expensive?
It looks like they're either $199 or $249. You also have to pay a monthly fee. There are apps for iPhones and Androids that let you enter what you eat wherever you are. But if you don't have one of those phones (like me), it looks like you have to enter what you've eaten when you are with your laptop.

What I wonder is how extensive is their database of caloriesfor different food items and brands? Do you have to measure or weigh everything you eat in order for it to keep track of your calorie intake? If I make homemade soup, do I have to break it down into separate ingredients for it to know how many calories I've consumed since it doesn't know my recipe?

How do it do dat?:dunno:
