My best friend was born into a specific caste and is the descendant of royalty. By your thinking I should not be friends with her, should hate her entire family, and should boycott her wedding.

NO.

By our thinking, it just means I get to wear a sari instead of some fugly bridesmaid dress and occasionally there will be a red dot on her mom's forehead.

It's only as important as you make it.

I'm conflicted on this. I'm torn between either not caring at all about this or agreeing with everything Pearlsb4U is saying. I guess I think royalty is evil and I want nothing to do with it, but the reason I'm not watching or paying much attention to this is because ??????? why would I ?????? Maybe my indifference is stronger than my hatred of royalty and my social conscience. That must be it. I guess next time I blow off a wedding invitation I need to ask myself, is it because I just didn't care, or because I thought the people were self-important royal types?

No, scooterbug, that is not my position. Your best friend should be treated as a friend--and an equal. You should go to her wedding and celebrate it positively, but not because she is "royal," but in spite of it. You should not hate her family, but treat each one of them as they deserve to be treated--on their merits, but not on their ancestry.
It is not my position that we should dislike William & Kate as persons.
It is my position that all people are created equal and we should not be in thrall to any person because of his/her ancestry.

I am enthralled by Will and Kate, my kids:lol:, not enthralled by the royals, but find them and their history interesting. I look forward to drinking some good coffee and just enjoying the wedding. I don't need to think about it too much- kind of takes the fun out of it- I am sure there will be plenty of Debbie Downers commenting though.....

Douglas, I certainly agree that weddings are a thing of joy--no argument there.
However, there are certain things even tolerant Americans should not be tolerant of.
I feel sure you'd agree we shouldn't be tolerant of slavery or sexism or racism.
Slavery, sexism & racism are based on the premise that some people are born better than others.
Royal-ism is based on that same assumption.
"Royalty" is equivalent to "classism" or "caste-ism." Do you honestly think we should be tolerant of an "ism" based on such an elite idea?
I'm not saying we should break off diplomatic relations w/ UK or declare war on them.
I'm just saying we should be negative about royalism & all its lavish ceremonies.
.
It's their culture, not ours. I have no problem with being curious about their ways of doing things. I'm really not worried anything "royal" is going to rub off onto me if I watch the wedding. I watch a lot of British TV and enjoy it. Interesting when traveling in Europe how many Europeans do not think their television programing fairly represents them - not unlike ours. So take things with a grain of salt.

Me thinks you protest way too much ............................... stirring the pot a little here?..;-)..
