What are you guys talking about? The Iraq war ended two years ago. I remember the Democrats telling me that as soon as they got in there, two years ago, they were bringing the troops home and ending the thing.

Two words:

Mission Accomplished

Don' even get me started about Congress. You can't blame the state of our union on any one party, anyway. I think a vast majority of all 535 of them should be fired...democrats AND republicans. The 110th congress will be remembered as possibly the least popular and least effective congress in history.

Since we have now succesfully derailed the Bush enviro topic and have moved it to a war conversation. I have a question or two. In regards to troop losses, the Bush administration took a substantial amount of heat from the media and others regarding the decision to not allow the press to show the coffins of American soldiers coming back home.

So in the light of open, transparent government, do you believe Obama will allow it? Also, do you think the media will cover it? Finally, will Americans have the stomach for it when hundreds (if not thousands) more soldiers come home from Afghanistan as they increase troop levels and fight in the moutains.

I know I wasn't around for Vietnam or the USSR/Afghan wars, but from where I sit I can see the possibility of Al Queda and possibly the Taliban burrowing in like the Viet Cong and making it very hard on us.

The media will cover it if it is allowed to be shown and I hope it will give Americans less of a "stomach" for war of any kind for any reason. All war stinks. We as a race (humans) should be able to do better at this time in our alleged evolution.

Now, can we get back to the original intent of this thread? I'm not sure how we got here, but I'll stop if everyone else will. I'm kind of weary of talking about this other cr@p.

I think that the media should be allowed to take photos of coffins - it's part of the deal. These people died for our country, but a photo of their flag draped coffin returning to our soil is offensive? The fact that we want to ignore the fact that dead soldiers will result from our decisions is more offensive IMO.

On a related subject, I think people who protest a military funeral for political reasons should be severely prosecuted.

Come on now. That is a fine group of economic intellectuals. Just ask the folks at AIG.

You think people who disrupt someone's burial when they have no specific reason to do so are worthy of our respect?

I didn't say no war protests, I said don't F w/ funerals for political reasons.

You can have my voter card if you can find it! Feel free to dust and vacuum while you look.

My point was that you are asking to take someone else's constitutional right of protest and assembly. Therefore I was offsetting it by taking your constitutional right to vote as a woman.

I absolutely can't stand Phelps and his group that do this, but I would also defend their right to protest and say what they want. The problem with censorship is that it can go both ways so it's best not to start it.

There are plenty of ways to prevent this, have the funeral in a private cemetery would be the easiest. The second would be to pass a law creating a noise ordinance during funeral services. That of course backfires (no pun intended) because it's a military funeral and those always have a 21 gun salute.
