I can't play DVDs on my laptop anymore. Yesterday I volunteered to help set up the AV for the projectors for the contemporary service at church (videos, audio, hymn lyrics projected :puke:). I prefer classical music at church. The contemporary crap is all working at church, but now I can't play a DVD on my laptop.

I can see the video, but I have no sound. Any suggestions? I really wanted to watch Almost Famous tonight. ARGH! I can see the video, but there is no audio. I am not a hardware person -- I am into computer science theory. Any help would be greatly appreciated.I always depend on my IT staff people for practical stuff,

:rotfl:...well, seeing as if I have never put a DVD in my computer, I guess I can't help you! I did just find the button that opens it on the side!

My IT guy spent 30 minutes on it today, and he couldn't figure it out. In his defense, he was helping hubby set up an AV presentation for a board meeting for the symphony orchestra. I am just a lowly department chair and full professor, so the high rollers who are big donors get first priority.:bang:

I'm no IT genius, but I'll give you my troubleshooting ideas. I'm assuming that you're getting no sound whatsoever from the laptop.

  • Check the volume/mute buttons. (Duh, right?)
  • I'm assuming you're on a PC. Go to the start button, control panel, sound and make sure nothing is muted on the master volume. I think you can open this by double clicking the volume control on the bottom right, too.
  • Are the speakers themselves working? You can plug some earphones into the laptop to check that.
Good luck with it. Hope you get it figured out.

If you are on a PC you can also revert back to a restore point, to a point before the trouble started. It sounds like your sound card drivers have gotten messed up/changed some how. Just a thought. Good luck!

Bullet 1: Volume is max, mute is off.
Bullet 2: Nothing is muted on the master volume.
Bullet 3: I can play all of my MP3s, yet no DVD has sound.:dunno:When I change the sound setting to stereo headphones, I can hear sound from my laptop on the church's sound system to Usher's "Yeah!" (I was teased me that this would be the last time that Usher was played at First Meth). But when I change the sound settings back to to "Desktop Stereo Speakers", there is no sound when I play a DVD on my laptop.

Weird.

Have you tried a Mac? :D

Try to wrangle the sound drivers out of your IT guys collection and reinstall them.

No. Daughter has a loaded Macbook Pro 17" that we bought her last fall. It is flippin' awesome.

But my employer buys my laptops, and IT specifies what we get (I did get more memory than other faculty members because I am considered a power user. The IT director says he's never seen a laptop that's less than a year old with keys and touchpad so worn out.

Yeah, I'll get IT to reinstall my sound drivers. I have to go to the office tomorrow anyhow because they're pushing out new virus protection software tomorrow. I have been without virus protection since Monday because they let the institutional licence expire.:yikes:

That's how I entertain myself when I visit Mom since she can't carry on a conversation due to Alzheimer's. She can't focus on TV or movies, can't read or write anymore, etc.
