TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WKRG) –Governor Ron DeSantis said during his daily briefing Friday that checkpoints will be set up at state lines in Florida, limiting travel from covid-19 hot spots like Louisiana.

Commercial vehicles would be allowed to move freely. DeSantis said that vacation rentals will also be suspended for two weeks, “if you’re coming from one of the epicenters, we probably think you should obey the directions of your state and local officials. And if they are telling you to shelter in place do that but don’t come here.”

DeSantis says Panhandle communities have relatively low numbers of cases and they want to keep it that way.

The Governor said this is an effort to prevent people from traveling to Florida to escape other “hot spots” of the coronavirus. Details on the checkpoints weren’t extremely clear, but DeSantis said people with certain license plates would be diverted and “if they blow through the checkpoints they could be pulled over”

Vacation rental people, when is Atlanta Week?

Day 3 (catching up) of The 12 Days of Experts

Dr Joel Kettner s professor of Community Health Sciences and Surgery at Manitoba University, former Chief Public Health Officer for Manitoba province and Medical Director of the International Centre for Infectious Diseases.

What he says:

I have never seen anything like this, anything anywhere near like this. I’m not talking about the pandemic, because I’ve seen 30 of them, one every year. It is called influenza. And other respiratory illness viruses, we don’t always know what they are. But I’ve never seen this reaction, and I’m trying to understand why.

[…]

I worry about the message to the public, about the fear of coming into contact with people, being in the same space as people, shaking their hands, having meetings with people. I worry about many, many consequences related to that.

[…]

In Hubei, in the province of Hubei, where there has been the most cases and deaths by far, the actual number of cases reported is 1 per 1000 people and the actual rate of deaths reported is 1 per 20,000. So maybe that would help to put things into perspective.

Day 4 of 12 - The 12 Days of Experts

Dr John Ioannidis Professor of Medicine, of Health Research and Policy and of Biomedical Data Science, at Stanford University School of Medicine and a Professor of Statistics at Stanford University School of Humanities and Sciences. He is director of the Stanford Prevention Research Center, and co-director of the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS).

He is also the editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Clinical Investigation. He was chairman at the Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology, University of Ioannina School of Medicine as well as adjunct professor at Tufts University School of Medicine.

As a physician, scientist and author he has made contributions to evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, data science and clinical research. In addition, he pioneered the field of meta-research. He has shown that much of the published research does not meet good scientific standards of evidence.

What he says:

Patients who have been tested for SARS-CoV-2 are disproportionately those with severe symptoms and bad outcomes. As most health systems have limited testing capacity, selection bias may even worsen in the near future.

The one situation where an entire, closed population was tested was the Diamond Princess cruise ship and its quarantine passengers. The case fatality rate there was 1.0%, but this was a largely elderly population, in which the death rate from Covid-19 is much higher.

[…]

Could the Covid-19 case fatality rate be that low? No, some say, pointing to the high rate in elderly people. However, even some so-called mild or common-cold-type coronaviruses that have been known for decades can have case fatality rates as high as 8% when they infect elderly people in nursing homes.

[…]

If we had not known about a new virus out there, and had not checked individuals with PCR tests, the number of total deaths due to “influenza-like illness” would not seem unusual this year. At most, we might have casually noted that flu this season seems to be a bit worse than average.

I realize this is #1 rule, but very very difficult for me. My nose itches a lot. My eyes too. I’m not whining, though. I actual had an idea for a partial solution for this problem. Someone should make “proximity bracelets” (and a necklace) so that when your hands reflexively get near your face (the necklace), lights would flash and maybe some annoying buzzer. Also, when you get within 6’ of another person, the necklace would also flash and make an annoying sound. If we are going to be at this for many months to come, it seems helpful. Also, it lets you know what people are really taking this seriously.

PLEASE do this. And I'm going to make this easy for you. I found a source here that you can buy flashing necklaces along with a whistle! How about that for annoying? LED Flashing Whistle Necklaces Wholesale Bulk Pricing-www.joissu.com

And please give one to your authoritarian, do-what-I-say-or-I-will-shame-you buddies so they can wear them too. If we can know who you all are, it would be great.

I have been doing some math and maybe I am not to good at it but here it goes. Roughly 7.5 billion people in the world and roughly 30000 deaths from the Virus, that is .000004.
According to the numbers I saw this morning there were 30395 deaths out of 665985 confirmed cases worldwide.
In the US 103321 confirmed cases with 1668 deaths out of a population of 329 million
In Florida 4039 confirmed cases with 56 deaths out of a population of 21.5 million people.
In Walton County we have 15 confirmed cases with 0 deaths out of a population 68500.
Now I am not diminishing this virus by any stretch of the imagination and I am listening to the public health officials and following appropriate PPE guidelines at my work so I don't bring this home to my family. I support the concept of staying home and closing businesses although it sucks for the economy. But watching folks either over react to a confirmed case or blow the whole thing off is ridiculous imo. There is a balance and hopefully the numbers put it in perspective. Be smart and stay home, limit exposure and we will get through this.

Vacation rental people, when is Atlanta Week?

Louisville public schools spring break would have started this past Friday. Folks checking in yesterday, Sat. I feel like Atlanta was the same time. (We tried spring break week once about 10 years ago. Seaside. No problems for us, just crowded. But a few bad things happened. I think someone started car fires.)

This is a fabulous video with your questions answered by a doctor on the front lines of this virus in New York. Take the time to watch and listen to what he says. Education is key!
