You need to have those hands smooth as a baby's butt for the new gig!

We can do that..

LL,
I've had the same problem most of my life, during the winter, and it is very painful! Buttoning a shirt is a killer! I even go to a dermatologist for this sometimes.

All of the suggestions are excellent. I HATE the greasy stuff too. I also HATE to wear gloves and sox to bed. Can't sleep that way. So I use the OTC ointments mentioned above (more concentrated than the body lotions) and then I use cloth-type bandaids on the cracks overnight. Sometimes, I even wear bandaids for several days. However, none of this prevents more cracking. That's where you have to use good soaps, or even wash your hands less, or without soap. I know that sounds gross, but... Just a quick rinse sometimes is all you need.
Also, my dermatologist said to actually use Super Glue on the cracks! It dosen't hurt, and it prevents infection!

ALSO, Rubber gloves when doing the dishes!!!!!

Like Mermaid, I'm in northern climes too...and cracked hands (and cracked cuticles..ouch!!) happen in the winter. I've tried all the OTC stuff mentioned here, but interestingly, the best thing I've found is using Pacquin's hand cream every night. its not greasy, and I can't stand wearing gloves to bed (its bad enough we have put them on every time we go outside now.) I'd second using gloves for household work. Pacquin's is hard to find (I use "Drugstore.com") but it works well for me if I use it every night. But since we moved back here from the south, the dry, very cold air can cause really awful things to happen. Husband and I also like Carmex for lips (when I'm not wearing lipstick).

Man, I am really feeling for y'all! The weather is getting frightful here tomorrow. I enjoy it because it happens so rarely....but believe me when I say the whole city tends to shut down when someone says SNOW!!!

Good luck! I remember in Bham everyone running out ahead of time for milk and bread (nothing else, it seemed, just milk and bread). Up here, nothing closes for snow or bad weather--you are just expected to suck it up and deal with it. Schools rarely close for snow, and my college hasn't closed for a storm in years. Thank god for our Jeeps. I'm still scared driving in a raging storm, tho.
