Sarcasm? Not sure what you are trying to say and not familiar with the group. Philanthropy from progressive and intelligent people tend to go towards the best bang for the buck. Providing means for people to educate themselves and connect with the world makes the world a better place. Also Gates and somw of his peers are tackling some of the basic healthcare and staples like clean water that the 3rd world needs to be lifted from the most dire conditions.

It was sarcasm, these guys collectively do some incredible things and politically it is a mixed bag with the Giving Pledge members. Why do the ultra wealthy become wealthier? Sometimes they just can't help it, their respective companies continue to grow, innovate and make money. I think what most people have a major issue with is more of the working wealthy and what they are stereotyped as..many times deservedly so.

I think most people simply have a feeling of when is enough wealth enough, and you said it pretty well that once you get a "wealth engine" started, what's the point of shutting it down. An NPR interview a few weeks ago had an economist give an analogy of wealth distribution, in this country that blew my mind: If the increase in wealth, for the lower 99%, in the last fifty years, was represented as an inch, the increase in wealth for the 1%(which consists of about 1800 households) would be represented by five miles. I will let that sink in.

Minimum Wage

This was interesting. http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2014...d-slow-future-hiring-employment-survey-shows/

I love our government. A minimum wage increase to $10.10 an hour would bring 900,000 people out of poverty, but major employers said that they would have to reduce workers by 20%, therefor requiring those employees to go either back on to, or necessitate more government assistance.

Hmmmm. Should minimum wage be dictated by popular vote? That way people would understand that hourly employees would see a 35% pay increase, but they would also be paying $6 for a Big Mac instead of $5. Companies do not take less profit, they charge consumers more. I would be cool with that, it fits into my flat tax thinking.

Interesting what the blog says about inflation. Personally I don't care what politicians say about this, I only want to hear what economists have to say.

When I say government, I mean all of them, not party exclusive. Has anyone seen the actual bill itself? I would love to see all of the BS bill rider add-ons, those are always great for a good chuckle. It is funny when people and the media are outraged when one party, or the other blocks a bill. But when you actually see the bill and the personal and party agendas, it becomes comical.

The CEOs would have to scale back workers because otherwise their net worth would drop from $10 Billion to $9.9999 billion.

No, it's closer to a price increase of 4 cents per meal if wages went to $10.10 per hour. With all the Republican talk of economic horror, when has an increase in the minimum wage ever wrecked the economy?

What's more comical is how Republicans are always telling us why something can't be done when it comes to wages, healthcare or jobs. Ask them about high income tax breaks and they wet their pants telling you all the good things it will accomplish. I watched Boehner the other day blame the President for him not advancing immigration reform. Imagine that, he won't do his job because he is worried about what someone else may do.

The current government and political system is a failed endeavor. Broken. It isn't worth arguing the Democrats have done nothing and stick their head in the sand, The Republi..cants don't know who they are. As Abe said, "America will never falter from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we have destroyed ourselves." I think we have the coordinates.

Who's your fact checker, Andy? That quote is closer to the fake Lincoln quote by Joe McCarthy when he addressed the nation in November 1953:

As Lincoln said, ‘From whence then will danger come? If this nation is to be destroyed, it will be destroyed from within, if it is not destroyed from within, it will live for all time to come.’

This is what Lincoln actually said:

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.
