Quit p***y footing around and raise it to a thousand dollars an hour and never speak of it again.

Yes it's true a pizza will be 1400 bucks and a six pack of the cheap stuff will set you back 800 but we will all be rich right? Isn't that how it works? I mean a guy on NPR says it so it must be true.

Never mind the fact that in six months the exact same people will be rich and the exact same people will be poor, it's all about emotion not moving the decimal point. Unless you put a cap on max earnings it will always be so, but of course that is what the idiot left truly want, people with a couple thousand posts on a dumb mesage board like this and the guy on NPR aren't being honest. They want to punish the wealthy and cap earnings much more than they care about helping the "poor" in this country. Unions push MW increases because union contacts include provisions for raising salaries by the same percentage as the MW increase, very few people make MW, but lots of people get a bump when it goes up and all consumer goods and services cost more because of it.

It's just a shame the vapid left can't be honest about anything.

Great catch, Seaducer! Many don't know that most, if not all, union contracts contain the minimum wage raise clause. Don't expect some who post that are "left" to acknowlege or accept this fact though. Some don't even accept paraphrasing as a method of communication. Sorry, carson, but you'll just have to learn to put up with the nonsense spouted by some.

Yes, I've heard the misguided argument that that the appropriate minimum wage is completely arbitrary and no thought has been put into it. I only hear it from brain dead Republicans from brain dead red states catering to their brain dead electorate.

The jump you propose wouldn't work anyway. Any economist will tell you that your argument is flawed on many levels. Your proposal would cause market chaos, however incremental raises are absorbed much easier. I think mother nature gave us a very good demonstration of that recently. Just replace water with money and you'll understand the concept.

Yes Andy, we do know about MW clauses, it's obvious you didn't. The real shame is the Right can't be honest and admit they care nothing about the average worker. A union contract has a minimum wage clause, so what? Workers protecting their interests is no different than businesses protecting their bottom line. The difference for Republicans is they support a business screwing the worker, the environment, and the taxpayer to achieve their goal. Republicans would rather workers shut-up and take whatever pay is offered even if it's zero.

I would think that the ratio between the poverty level and the minimum wage should stay more or less constant over the years. I'm sure it's much different today than it was 10 years ago.

And, as so often the case, poppy, you are wrong. I was well aware of the MW clause and it is one of the main reasons I am opposed to raising the MW. Just for further enlightenment, which you sorely need, I was a union member long before you were probably born. Your so obvious hate of the Republican party is misdirected, flawed and in general, without merit. It is not the Republican party that is to blame for our present mess. It is the American public in general who cannot recognize they are being used, not only by the Democrats and Republicans, but a corrupt administration that lies to them at the drop of a hat.

Now that's comical, a man who constantly posts e-mails containing lies and falsehoods because he is to lazy to fact check telling another poster he is wrong.
