i submit a story about kids being wearhoused in gyms due to lack of funds, and the knucklehead brigade takes the discussion into an attack on unions, vouchers, strikes, pay and absenteeism. nothing of value is brought forth to recommend a solution, and again, i learn nothing of value from the same few here.

since i do not teach i can only say what wife does. she is not a member of the teacher's union. she works 10-12 hour workdays mentoring and tutoring outside of class hours. she was accorded no bonus last year because her performanced was judged by students she does not teach....insane! her national board certification mentoring pay has been taken away, and her classroom is now populated with several emotionally handicapped and autistic children. when teachers are absent, the kids are split up and crowded into the regular classrooms. you tell me what to do? i have sent numerous emails to my state reps and the governor illustrating the plight of teachers. gov. christ recently stood up to the legislature and fought the curtailment of national board certification pay. it's an uphill battle against the repubs who want to gut public education and promote religious schools. the answer is to fund our schools. cig tax/gas tax, intangible tax...even income tax if that's what it takes. What's your solution, Bob? What are you doing to fix this?
I think pay should be based on experience, education level, and performance. The issue I have with the teachers unions is that they often stand against reform that could improve the system. I don't feel they act in the students best interests, and that to me, is wrong.
Based on what? As for paying teachers for experience, education level and performance, how do you judge performance? My issue with performance based pay you have to believe that those with the power will be fair in giving out the raises. Then you have to think that as soon as the budget comes up short, those with the power can reduce the amount they allot for raises. Those with the power get to determine what is a fair raise no matter how dedicated, deserving, or what your performance is. Based on your reasoning the school teachers in SoWal should get some serious raises based on the performance on the FCAT, the improvement in the Sport Programs the education.
Divying up raises and bonuses, doing performance reviews, and docking pay or firing employees due to bad performance happens every day across the world in business. I really don't think it'd be that hard to extend the practice to schools.Based on what? As for paying teachers for experience, education level and performance, how do you judge performance?
