I agree - do not have garage sales! Sell the really valuable stuff in the local newspaper (for us, the AJC). But for the odds and ends, old furniture, and clothes, you're better off just getting someone to buy the whole bunch. We found this out when we moved Mom from the "big house" to a smaller place. Or, depending on your tax bracket, you'll be better off donating the stuff to Goodwill and getting the tax write-off (I mean, if you paid $3000 for a Chanel jacket, it's worth $1500 - no way you'd get that in a garage sale), as opposed to dealing with the nickel-and-diming of the people who hit the yard sales. Not to mention the chances of getting robbed, which meant that the one time we did a yard sale, we had to hire an off-duty police officer for security.

:rotfl: :rotfl: If I had a Chanel jacket, I certainly would not be selling it! Especially at a garage sale!!! I hope our FBI agent neighbor will stop by in case we need security. Actually, some neighbors came over tonight and had a few drinks, shopped, visited, and well-wished, so it was fun. And I gave them the "good neighbor" discount.

Good grief BR- sounds like I would need to take out a loan to shop at your garage sale!!:D

But in Atlanta I can't wear stuff like that if it's more than a year old. Even the sales people at Neiman's roll their eyes as if to say, "Oh, that's SO last year," and then start looking as if they're gonna barf.

That's one reason why now I totally buy throw-away clothes (Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, etc.). It's cheap, it lasts a season, and then I toss it. Because no one except me, a few of my close friends, and the sales people at Neiman's appreciate a $3000 Chanel jacket.

Jdarg and I shop the Banana Republic outlet stores and you can ask anyone how fashionable we are. We are tres chic and we'd dare any shop girl to roll her eyes at us. (so there, take it in the buttkus, Needless Mark-up!)

The turning point in my "clothes" life ( and I could never afford expensive clothes, but when I was younger I spent probably more that I should have worrying about looking "right"), was a children's book- "Fanny McFancy- A Passion for Fashion." It is wonderful- about a whooping crane ("a bird with great fashion, a bird with great flair"), who is invited to a tea with the "girls". She totally stresses over what to wear- and ends up going to the tea wearing absolutely nothing but her own feathers! And creates a sensation- because she was different and did not wear clothes that other people were wearing- she had her own style, and it was FREE!

It is one of those children's books that grownups should buy for themselves.:clap_1:

My neighbor is gay. I have been to parties where they were wearing just feathers. :funn:

I hear ya. I'm totally not into high fashion any more. Been there, done that. All I want is (a) our family to be healthy and happy, and (b) having neighbors not trying to screw us out of our hard-earned money by changing the zoning in our neighborhood.

Best thing I've heard on SoWal all week.
