I would paint the cabinets in a soft white not a bright white or for color yellow. It would make it brighter. I would change the light fixture it looks like it could be flourescent. I would go vintage style on your appliances...kinda like the ones Rachel Ray has because your kitchen is very much a cottage kitchen. The floors you could do hardwoods, but with the in and out of the pets I would suggest a slate or an industrial grade linoleum tile. You can use 2 colors you can custom order these from Home Depot. I would not use a white tile...especially with pets...shows everything and will drive you crazy. I think a laminate countertop with a bull nose edge if you are on a tight budget. If you have favorite kitchen accessories you may want to consider these win choosing a color palette. Keep your knobs brushed nickel and your other fixtures as well. Send us a pic when you finish!

A softer look may come from strippin' them cabinets, and rather than painting outright, using a transparent stain or paint wash...

The only pet I have now walks on two legs and is 6'0". And we would still need the slate tile. Our kitchen and bathroom both have heavy traffic prints constantly, especially bad when it has rained, as our yard is a muddy mess when it rains. And work shoes worn in a warehouse don't do wonders for those floors, they cause black streaks on that and our wood floors.

Since we cannot decide what to do with the kitchen yet we are going to start with our bedroom first as to painting and fixing up. We have decided on this paint and wall mural, the paint we picked up today, and we have ordered the wall mural. This is the paint color used in the beach townhouse we rent, Sherwin Williams Kind Green. I love this color. Of course, I may add some wallpaper tropical border along the top of the wall if it is not too much. If we cannot be at the beach all the time, at least we can have the reminder of it when seeing this. Very nice.
