I'm doing it in a cheaper-no-sleeper car! $95--I absolutely love to fly, but Delta couldn't touch that one.
Yeah, the sleeper car sometimes adds hundreds of dollars to the ticket.

A couple of months ago when I bought the ticket, a couple of the folks here told me stories that guaranteed I would not sleep on the train!

 ok, I was just thinking how much fun the train trip sounded. I don't sleep well at home, doubt it would be a problem for me. My niece took a train trip all over France when she was in college and booked night trips so she could sleep. My sister in law's hair is gray due to this.

Amtrak stopped the Sunset Limited after Katrina. I remember about 2 months ago legislation was passed to re-open the line from Jacksonville to NOLA. It might not become reality for a while yet. When it does happen, the closest stations would be Chipley and Crestview.

I got on at Chipley before - this was pre-Katrina. When you look at the station list, I think Jacksonville is the closest Fla Station. Alabama is B'ham or Anniston for the closest station.

To go south on Amtrak, you have to go all the way to Jacksonville and come back toward the center of the state and start south. I don't know about now but they used to go north on certain days and south on other days. I would love to take it to WPB but there is no station nearby to get on.

Scooterbug -- I've been wanting to do a train trip forever. Here's the trip I've planned -- get on the train in NOLA, and head up to Chicago. Spend a couple of days in Chicago -- take the boat tour of architecture, do the foodie restaurants, then fly home.

wouldn't it be nice if there was a regional train station up where the new International Airport is being built...frankly, I'd rather have a train than the airport, but since the powers that be seem determined to build an airport, I wish there was a train plan too.

Think how wonderful it would be to take a train from here to NOLA...from there on up to Chicago...from there into Canada across to Vancouver...down to Seattle and on down the beautiful California coast, back across the deserts in New Mexico and Arizona....

I have taken the train across Canada. It is the trip of a lifetime; and I have traveled the California coast too. Both are certainly worth doing...beautiful scenery, and wonderful people. Almost impossible to get there from here via rail though.

I also enjoyed the train travel in Alaska. Up there they do not run at night. Agree that the European trains are great; so are the Japanese ones...
