Gov. Crist Seeks Permanent Drilling Ban | TheLedger.com

We need an elected official that will stand up to the greed of the oil companies IMO...Gov Crist may be the one who can break the logjam of special interests and partisan "no"...my best sources tell me if he wins in November, he will caucus with the Democrats, so maybe he can spearhead a movement for the moderates in both parties...

The Governor's position is all fine and well but what would a Senator Crist have to say about granting Louisiana's request for a much higher percentage of the royalties for permitting oil and gas drilling off the Louisiana coast? Senator Nelson has been taking a beating from the good folks in Louisiana because of his position on this issue and rightly so. We in Florida want all of the benefits of oil and gas exploration and production (we make much in our advertising about being within driving distance of 14 million people) but none of the downside.

the sacrifice we will make is that we will pay more for the same commodity, people will choose products based on efficiency. there is no free market concerning oil. our military is the fulcrum, and all the major players are multi-national. the solution is not more oil supply, but less. the endgame draws near if we do nothing.

If we use our domestic resources the military and the middle eastern regimes become much less of a factor.

What he said.

We should be pressuring/challenging each other to CONSERVE. A transition away from dirty fuel can and should come with renewed research and development of alternative energy sources as soon as possible, along with what we can all do right now - CONSERVE like you never have before!
I believe we could reduce our need for oil enough to make a huge difference just through conservation efforts.
Here are threads with ideas SoWal members are sharing to help any of us who care to do our part in being good stewards of our environment:

I am all for finding alternative sources of energy, but you can't just stop drilling and exploration until it is invented and or discovered.

I am really fed up with hearing this!

ALTERNATIVES ARE HERE! The problem is the total misinformation out there and the constant posts being repeated time and again about how maybe one day ......:bang:

Let me ask a question - If I just built a house and said that I put in gold faucets, crown moulding, granite, marble, tiled floors, etc... I'd probably be told that I made a wise investment because that is what people want - most wouldn't think twice at those decisions - right? (anyone can take this and go with it.....)

But everytime I mention that we have a net zero home where we put up SOLAR PANELS that yes, have been invented, I inevitably hear - but how much did you spend?? (like the granite or marble would even begin to pay me back like my solar does)

I just built a house and less than 9% of my total cost of building went into solar - and we are the ONLY new construction on Chelco to go solar. So the question should be WHY are we NOT doing this on a larger scale? Bad info circulating about solar that is often times based on trying to "fix" older buildings with solar. Let's start NOW on all new construction and produce CLEAN ENERGY!

I support politicians who want to put FL on the map as the SOLAR STATE - then maybe we will start to get somewhere. I've even had email correspondence with a few asking them to come see our humble abode and see what can be done without sacrificing one bit! (ok, I didn't get gold faucets or granite )

If we'd stop building houses with 2x4 construction (insane for energy & hurricane country) and start new building plans with conservation in mind that would be a huge first step. Safety and conservation should be the first two considerations always IMO.

We do NOT have to have the oil off our shores. We can make the changes starting tomorrow and they are not sacrifices. Talk about sacrificing - we are sacrificing our Earth and waters and animals and human life is what we are doing.

I am still waiting for someone to tell me what sacrifices they are willing to make if we stop all drilling!
The better question would be the one asking those who SUPPORT drilling off our precious waters what THEY are doing to conserve!

I've yet to see ONE of the supporters of drilling frequent any of the oil conservation threads Rita just linked us to. You are welcome to COME ON OVER! :welcome:

People live in a dream world if they think that in our life time there will be a world without oil. And that is what I think we will call a, just have to agree to disagree thing. FYI, i do reduce, reuse and recycle and my home doesn't have granite, marble or crown moulding either. If I was considering new construction you betcha I would look into the things you have done, all I can do now is to try to make my home more efficient. I really resent the inference that I hate the earth etc. etc. and that those that are against drilling are somehow superior.
I do appreciate your response to my question, but I have one more do you still drive a car?
