Wow, this is quite a surprise!

While I think it is great that he won, I don't really understand what he won it for.

Obviously I agree with his emphasis on diplomacy, dialogue, and getting rid of nuclear weapons, and he is certainly doing more to improve foreign relations and bring about peace than Bush, but I guess I always thought you had to DO more to get a Nobel Peace Prize.

exposing killer terrorists to the world and starting the movement of ridding the world of terror is a peaceful gesture is it not? it aint gonna be easy and the president is finding that apologizing and having a cup of tea aint gonna bring about peace. but, itll get you a nobel prize though:dunno:

My favorite reaction so far:

YO OBAMA, I'M GONNA LET YOU FINISH, BUT I JUST WANNA SAY THAT MARTIN LUTHER KING JR WAS THE BEST NOBEL PRIZE WINNER OF ALL TIME.

I'm sure this was a WTF moment for every single person in the world outside of the committee and perhaps the person who nominated him, which of course lends credence to the question of whether he deserves it.

But the committee's reasons spell it out -- and it is difficult to argue with their logic if that is where they are coming from. I am proud of the humility of Obama's reaction, and astounded at the world reaction to his presidency, which has been reflected in polls, but has been fully brought into focus by today's announcement.

It's heartening. Congratulations President Obama! Now, get back to work.

True - I don't think most Americans realize just how big Obama's presidency is abroad. Michelle is in all the European fashion magazines (basically it's her, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and the Hollywood stars) and Obama is constantly on the TV news and in the papers.

Given how well respected he is, I guess the Nobel shouldn't be such a surprise.
