benjamin franklin " there never was a good war or a bad peace".I don't agree at all with this, but then again, I don't feel war in certain cases should be prevented, in fact in many cases is a necassary and justified.

Good grief Andy, I can't believe I'm getting back into this discussion but I will make one last comment on my belief about war. I've never said my view is right or anyone else's is wrong it's just my opinion ok. I believe all wars are preventable if both sides will just give a little, there has to be a common ground somewhere to prevent the death and destruction brought on by war. You say preventing war flies in the face of human nature, well I hope you are wrong. I hold out hope that someday civilization will advance just enough to realize we are not all the same and never will be, that being different in color, religion, language, customs, sexuality and nationality is what makes our world so interesting. We don't have to agree on everything but we don't have to fight over it either. This is one reason I purchased the Florida John Lennon license plate, It may never happen but just imagine.![]()
Well thanks, with citizens like you and Andy it looks as if my four grandchildren will experience a world with war after all. It was my hope they would live in a more peaceful world but I'm the dreamer and idealist and the two of you have already thrown up your arms and surrendered the peace in favor of war being more practical, necessary and justified. Hell, it sounds like you two are already making a case for the next conflict, who are we going to kick the crap out of ?
Other than generalizations I really can't say for sure. The next Hitler? Whoever that might be? Top of the list.
It would be a true miracle if we never see another tyrannical or murderous leader come to power, but we are human, and evolution doesn't happen over night. In the mean time we have to protect ourselves and our interests.
I'm curious though poppy, if I remember correctly from other discussions, you don't believe in any religion or any form of God. Is that correct? If so, what in your view is wrong with going to war and killing your enemies as an act of self preservation? According to Darwin, war is an act of survival, and is quite natural and quite common in nature.
I think I can answer that. First God has nothing to do with a sense of what is right and wrong in the case of a non-believer. Non-belief doesn't give you free reign to go on a killing spree.
Darwinism is just a fact of nature, not a code to live by. Humans have the ability to subvert nature including their own. They also have the obligation to do so. That being said, I think the root causes of war are less about human nature than they are about indoctrination, nationalism, religion, herd mentality in other words. And as I stated earlier it's also about wagging the dick.
how does a doctrine kill anyone?
Of course, that type of behavior would be not be selected for. It's no wonder tyranical leaders and serial killers often end up behind bars, dead in a bunker someplace or hanging from a noose.
You can't pick and chose when and how you apply an inherent trait. You can trick yourself into thinking you can, but in the end it will manifest itself in some form or another as it defines what you perceive as right and wrong. "indoctrination, nationalism, religion, herd mentality" - why do people feel the need for this type of "group think"? Doesn't this behavior serve a purpose?
Just the fact that today we talk about these things and are conscious of the role they play means that their function in society has changed. So we are in a sense getting away from the more tribal "group think". We don't all accept it at face value.
That likely is not a trait that is selected for.![]()
