The actual quote from the book "Audacity of Hope" is from page 261 and is as follows: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Glad you too verified it.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but ONN (formerly known as CNN) has been majorly disparaging Obama today. O-BAMA made statements regarding that instead of Latinos in the U.S. trying to assimilate by learning English, our children should be learning Spanish.

Heck, in our county we have a 40% illiteracy rate. At least give them a chance to learn English before they are forced to try to learn yet another language.

CNN was going :yikes:.

Did he really say that Latinos in the United States should not learn english? This has made me think of (recall actually..it isn't my material) a new signature line. Thanks!

According to CNN, Obama said that rather than Latinos assimilating, U.S. children should learn Spanish. It's a noble goal for U.S. citizens to not be so provincial and to be able to converse in other languages. But it just shows just how elitist Obama is -- he has no clue that in a county in a suburb of a major U.S. city (e.g., Atlanta), there is a 40% illteracy rate in the ENGLISH language.

Even Jack Cafferty and the CNN crew were dissing Obama for his comments regarding this issue.

Spanish is an easier language than english as it spells like it sounds. Perhaps much of the %40 would have a better chance learning spanish and then upon learning spanish they could then take ESL classes...

No! He did not say that at all. He made it very clear that immigrants to this country should learn English. He was just acknowledging the hard reality that in the years to come, there will be many in this country who do indeed speak Spanish. There is no way to stop it of course. Those who are concerned about communication problems would do better to learn Spanish than to whine about it. He was objecting to the "English only attitude". I personally predict that by the middle of this century will will have a president whose first name is Jesus. Anyway here is a youtube video of what Obama had to say. people are constantly spreading misinformation about him. I find him not to be the least bit elitist and always good-natured.
