FCOL - with all the problems in the world is there ANYONE out there who actually WANTS our government to preach abstinence????

Again - families and church and organizations can step to the plate - and government should stay out of trying to define values - especially when they are one set of narrow values trying to be rammed down the throat of an increasingly diverse population.

What if the position of educators come in direct conflict with people's values? If religious conservatives don't have the right to ram their values down someone elses throat, why should liberal educators have the right to ram their values down our childrens throats? IMHO both sides are guilty of pushing their own values. I think to be safe public education should not be representative of any one view of the world, it should always strive to avoid taking a side. The rest should be left up to the parents.

From Merriam- Webster:Main Entry: sex?ism Pronunciation: \ˈsek-ˌsi-zəm\ Function: noun Etymology: 1sex + -ism (as in racism) Date: 1968 1: prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women2: behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex.
? sex?ist \ˈsek-sist\ adjective or noun

Plus, how can I remotely be sexist when I am not discriminating against her? Not agreeing with someone's choices doesn't mean I am prejudiced or discriminatory towards that person. It means that we have different values.

Pouncing on someone that you don't know isn't very nice.

I'm quite sure your not sexist, but your views expressed in that post could easily be interpreted as such. A woman's place after having a baby is in the home, woman shouldn't tend to their careers after they have children, women with careers aren't capable of being good mothers, etc etc.. That's sexism.

And we are back to assuming that all kids have parents who will teach their kids at home about all the aspects of becoming sexually active - physically and emotionally and safely. Individuals are not doing this enough anymore. As a society, we can't count on that anymore- the only place that kids can be taught with a chance that they might "get it" is at school. Teaching them abstinence only is a pregnancy waiting to happen- they most likely will have sex at some point, and they better know how to prevent pregnancy and STDs. Learning about these things go hand and hand with teaching the morals and values part.

The state should be given control over the education of our children because parents can't be trusted to do the job? I'm feeling ill. This is a very very slippery slope. Do me a favor and keep your politics and your personal views on how my kids should be educated out of my f'n schools. Thank you.

Good Article.

This thread has gotten way too long for me to keep up with it. I just wanted to add one thing. Some people on this board and many people elsewhere are critical of Sarah Palin because they think she has shown poor judgment about running with McCain because it will be hard on her family (i.e., putting Bristol in the spotlight and spending time away from a special needs newborn). However, I see this campaign as an incredible opportunity for this family to travel throughout the country meeting people and learning from them. It is an incredible opportunity for the children to learn how the political system works and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for their mother. In my opinion, the benefits of running for Vice President, far outweigh the hardships that the family may face. And should she and McCain win, well that opportunity goes without saying. So I think she has shown good judgment in deciding to go for it despite the challenges that she knew she would face because I think she is doing what is best for her family and I think most of us would do the same if we had the opportunity.

Her decision is a self serving, and self centered one. What are her priorities as a human being, as well as a mother ? Gov Palin has placed herself squarely as issue one because she is clearly unqualified for high office. The fact that she has placed her own self interest and the interest of her family before the interest of Senator McCain and her party is telling....... not to mention how her family is going to suffer immensely. This family is a typical small town working class family whose wife and mom has become a meteoric success in a very short period of time. I don't think they are prepared to suffer what is ahead of them. National politics is like a fight to the death with a lot of colllateral damage. The opposition will show no mercy. I pray for this family because I don't think they can survive what is ahead of them....and it has only been 3 days !!! Over the next month the media and the left wing bloggers will investigate her and stuff always pops up whether it is true or false. Gov Palin....is it worth it ??

I've only read the last couple of pages of this thread, so my comment here is somewhat limited based on that fact. But I can't tell you how amazed I am by the contradiction in ideals. I see people who want and foster change, but when somebody is put in front of you that really, really represents change, you criticize. Palin's entire career has represented a willingness to go against corruption and the status quo. That's in direct opposition to what your candidate, Obama, has done.

Yet you espouse change. Yet you expect women to remain barefoot and in the kitchen and take care of everything while there's a perfectly good man to do those things. I don't get it.

Do I even have a father?

In the words of Rapunzel.....tsk tsk. shame shame.

More sexist views IMHO - a women who's motivated to achieve greatness in her career is automatically assumed to be ignoring the interests of her children. Spin this around, what if her husband were running instead of Sarah? Would we be sitting around discussing how Todd Palin was doing a disservice to his family for running for V.P.? I think not. Is Obama doing a disservice to his daughters by running for President? I think not. So why is Sarah? The only difference here is the fact that she's a woman.

Are you familiar with the term "consensus reality"?
I did not see Bob's comment as a rebuttal nor a personal attack. I wonder if you might answer the implied question in Bob's comment? I myself have no children and where children are concerned, I try to be very wary of passing judgement on the methods and practices of those who do.
