FCOL - with all the problems in the world is there ANYONE out there who actually WANTS our government to preach abstinence????

Again - families and church and organizations can step to the plate - and government should stay out of trying to define values - especially when they are one set of narrow values trying to be rammed down the throat of an increasingly diverse population.

Spend the money and time and resources on what counts - any of you recently read about the HUGE number of schools having to make hard decisions about cost cutting (laying off teachers, shortening the school week, cutting back on print material, electives, field trips, etc...) - the number of homeless children because of the mortgage mess, rising fuel and food costs is staggering (and I could go on and on) - education is severely lacking in many parts of the country - America no longer competes with other nations (lucky that they make up a lot of ground in colleges and universities but then again, many people do not go on to higher education)....but, no, we are still going to talk about sexuality????

Yes it sounded very sexist to me, although obviously I realize you didn't intend it to be. We have no evidence that Sarah Palin is a bad mother. I just hope this election isn't "headed down that road".

I think keeping an eye out and pouncing on anything even vaguely sexist is important in light of how Hillary was treated by the main street media during her campaign.

From Merriam- Webster:Main Entry: sex?ism javascript:popWin('/cgi-bin/audio.pl?sexism01.wav=sexism') Pronunciation: \ˈsek-ˌsi-zəm\ Function: noun Etymology: 1sex + -ism (as in racism) Date: 1968 1: prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women2: behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex
? sex?ist javascript:popWin('/cgi-bin/audio.pl?sexism02.wav=sexist') \ˈsek-sist\ adjective or noun

Plus, how can I remotely be sexist when I am not discriminating against her? Not agreeing with someone's choices doesn't mean I am prejudiced or discriminatory towards that person. It means that we have different values.

Pouncing on someone that you don't know isn't very nice.

Parenthetical comment: I wonder what "going back to work" entails. I have friends who have gone "back to work" within a couple of days because they had spent the last 9 months being pregnant with other children clinging to their ankles, and work was the best way to run out of the house screaming for a couple of hours while Daddy held up the bottle for once. One of my best friends just had her third child and went back to her job as soon as she was cleared by her doctor--any objection to it from her hubby would have been grounds for divorce! (And she's an excellent mother.)

Families are hard. That's all there is to it.

Being cleared by your doctor is usually 4-6 weeks. My SIL went back to work at 4 weeks with both her kids. It was prior to a doctor's clearance. Families are hard. No one's saying anything about them being easy.

most folks would do well not to have kids, much less be married if they truly thought of the time and commitment.

1. The education system has better things to do than to teach sex education other than the health aspects of unprotected sex and the huge responsibility that children are.
2. The parents are responsible to educate their children on the moral issues.
3. Anyone who thinks that a certain percentage of teenagers are not going to be controled by their hormones, no matter who their parents are and how hard their parents try to prevent something from happening, is crazy.:dunno:
4. Gov. Pallin's family issues are not fodder for a political race, the fodder should be the ideas of both sides. Our job as voters is to educate ourselves on each candidate's views and vote for the one who most closely mirrors our own.
5. The left wing idiots who put the story out that Gov. Pallin's baby is actually her daughter's deserve a special place in H***.:pissed:

I think it's kind of funny that the abstinence with teenagers is discussed, as if the "pacts" that so many of the churches are getting teens to sign are working. It's not that abstinence isn't a good thing, it's just that it is realistic. Teens have sex and girls get pregnant. It's normal. SJ's totally right on regarding that.

Palin is pro-abstinence, but standing behind her daughter. That's great, also. At least she's not trashing her, like a lot of parents do. I'm not blaming her daughter's pregnancy on her. I'm just saying that she's got a baby at home that needs her, a 17 year old daughter that REALLY needs her now, how can she be a good candidate? Yes, fulfilling her current term and then possibly seeking election later, after all this blows over would give her time to focus on those that truly need Palin: her children.

But I don't get the viewpoint of traditional values, especially because it goes out the door regarding babies. MissCritter put it best that babies need round the clock attention... Oh, I forgot, we're in the age of Ferberizing our children, like that's the best thing since sliced bread! Today, babies are meant to be molded into trained little robots from day 1, passed off to whoever take care of them.

It'd be more expensive for me to get day care and after school care for my children, so I chose to not work for a period of time and now I am going to be working around their schedules. But, in today's overly feminist times, that's not woman enough.

That's sad to polarize the heck out of the issues.

And if the shoe was on the other foot (or the baby in a Democrat candidate's child's tummy), the Republicans would not have broken the story? Yeah, right.

I think the world was going to know- nobody really 'broke" this story.

Wasilla ain't Washington, or maybe even Walla Walla.

I found this story to be very interesting and touching. From Time magazine:

In Wasilla, Pregnancy Was No Secret

I no longer stay in Dune Allen
McCain was the the Commanding Officer of a Replacement Air Group (“RAG”), a unit that trained replacement pilots.
Perhaps Obama was leader of a Cub Scout Troop ("CST") or an equivalent while traveling, it is possible that would have prepared them equally for unilateral decision making....maybe. Do any of the Barack books say anything about Scouts?

Agree, and actually according to my research of stories/news casts in Alaska, this was a story that had been going around Alaska for a long time. In fact, the Governor's press secretary had been asked about it numerous times according to his statements to the newspaper.
